Chapter 1168 - 650: In the United States with Wen Xi
Wen Xi is a supermodel at the very top tier of the global supermodel circle.
Her work has always been more inherently international than that of actors and singers; over the course of a year she probably flies to no fewer than ten countries, and has at least thirty overseas events.
Zhou Yun and Wen Xi were able to become friends because of a connection they made on VX at the very beginning.
Later on, thanks to all sorts of coincidences, they kept running into each other at various events, and grew increasingly in sync.
Their relationship is so solid in part because their professional attributes differ, so there’s basically no competition between them.
When you’re young, you tend to think feelings are stronger than gold, that as long as you really get along, nothing will affect the relationship. But once you truly step into society and start facing all the messy, concrete realities, you come to understand that the soil and space you rely on to survive may not allow you to act purely on emotion.
Both Zhou Yun and Wen Xi fought their way up on their own to get to where they are today.
If there really were a conflict of interest between them, it’s not a given that either of them would voluntarily back down.
They both understand this, but before such a conflict of interest actually appears, they still, in tacit agreement, cherish this friendship.
At the same time, they very earnestly hope that such a conflict never arises.
Zhou Yun has also wondered whether, in a person’s lifetime, there is anything that can truly be called unchanging.
When you think about it, you can’t even guarantee that you yourself will never change, let alone other people and external things. It’s better to be a little pessimistic, to avoid unrealistic expectations, so you won’t be disappointed and can maintain a calm mind.
Precisely because of this, every time Zhou Yun and Wen Xi meet, Zhou Yun can genuinely enjoy the warmth and happiness this friendship brings her.
Because there’s no sense of possession, they can have those unexpected moments of warmth and surprise.
"I ran into He Wenyun not long ago," Wen Xi suddenly said. "She really came out of nowhere—debuting in a film directed by Spielberg, and now she’s going to star in the blockbuster Chinese Warrior. She’s riding a huge wave; over here in Europe and America she’s getting a lot of attention. Just last month I shot a magazine cover with her in France."
Wen Xi’s gaze fell on Zhou Yun. These words were clearly a way of testing where Zhou Yun stood.
What was Zhou Yun’s attitude toward He Wenyun, exactly?
Zhou Yun nodded and said, "I’ve worked with her. She’s a pretty straightforward person."
As for He Wenyun, Zhou Yun couldn’t say she liked or disliked her; she did feel a certain sense of crisis, but it hadn’t reached the point of making a big deal out of it.
Hearing Zhou Yun say this, Wen Xi understood where Zhou Yun stood.
"What’s your relationship with Xue Qin like?" Wen Xi suddenly asked.
The question sounded a bit odd.
Zhou Yun had already worked with Xue Qin on two films. Especially given the incident when Falling Leaves was halted midway, and Zhou Yun firmly supported Xue Qin in shooting Behind the Scenes, that story had already been dragged out and repeated countless times during promotions; Wen Xi ought to know it. Since she knew, why would she still ask this kind of question?
Zhou Yun said, "It’s okay. I quite admire her. I suppose she probably feels more or less the same about me."
Wen Xi asked, "Then do you know Xue Qin is preparing her third film?"
Zhou Yun shook her head.
She hadn’t heard anything about it.
Wen Xi said, "I only heard it by chance at a cocktail party. I heard Paimon has taken a liking to a script, already bought it, and wants Xue Qin to direct and He Wenyun to star."
"Is that so?" Zhou Yun said after weighing her words. "This is the first I’ve heard of it."
"Actually, for a director as hot as Xue Qin, there must be a lot of projects eyeing her. The news I heard may not have progressed to actual development," Wen Xi said, spreading her hands with a smile. "The intel in your film and TV circle is always half real, half rumor. I just listen."
"Information-wise, knowing a bit more never hurts," Zhou Yun said with a smile. "But I’d heard before that Xue Qin was going to direct a foreign-language film next. Why would she cast He Wenyun again? Is it still a Chinese-language film?"
"It’s probably an English-language film, but it might tell an Asian story," Wen Xi said. "You know, in the past few years there have been several very popular films and series with Asian leads. Now a lot of companies are starting to build content with Asians as the protagonists, especially many streaming platforms that have been working very closely with Korea."
"K-dramas themselves are heavily influenced by American series—their story themes and pacing are much closer to American shows. And of course, Korea’s film and TV industry has developed very fast over the years; they dare to tackle lots of subjects and can actually get them made." Zhou Yun sighed. "But you know, we don’t have that much freedom."
