Cannon Fodder in an Era Drama — I Survive with Acting

Chapter 236: It Has to Be You

Chapter 236: It Has to Be You

She gently pursed her lips, feeling it was time to give her family a heads-up about the matter.

"Mom, there’s something I want to tell you and Dad in advance. I’ll need your cooperation, so you don’t accidentally let it slip."

Liu Li was sitting on the sofa, peeling an orange.

At these words, her hands paused.

She looked up at her daughter. The smile on her face slowly faded, and her brow furrowed slightly.

"What’s wrong, Qingya? Just tell me. Mom will definitely help you!"

Song Qingya nodded and took a deep breath to calm herself.

Her tone was steady as she recounted the entire story from beginning to end.

"So, to keep Mrs. Yuan and Yang Meiling in check and to prevent anyone else from getting suspicious, I had Ajin arrange for a rumor to be spread. It says that Mrs. Yuan’s verbal attacks at the hospital today made me so emotional that it caused complications with my pregnancy, and... the baby is gone."

"What?!"

At this, the orange in Liu Li’s hand dropped and rolled to the floor.

She shot to her feet, crossed over to Song Qingya in a few quick strides, and grabbed her wrist.

"The baby’s gone?! Qingya, are you okay? Did something like that really happen? What exactly happened?"

She was clearly terrified.

Seeing this, Fei Jin immediately got up and went over to them. He held Liu Li’s arm with one hand and gently patted her back with the other.

"Mom, please don’t panic. Let me finish. It’s not real, it’s just an act. Qingya didn’t have a miscarriage. The baby is fine, and everything is normal."

Liu Li paused, blinking as her mind whirred. After a few seconds, she finally understood.

She opened her mouth and let out a long, drawn-out "Ohhh."

As if all the air had gone out of her, she collapsed heavily against the back of the sofa.

"So it was all fake!"

She let out a huge sigh of relief and patted her chest a couple of times.

"You scared me to death! My heart nearly stopped! I really thought something terrible had happened... If the baby were really gone, I... how would I ever explain it to your dad? How could I face the two of you..."

As she spoke, she couldn’t resist reaching out to touch Song Qingya’s stomach.

"So that’s what this is about... Alright, I get it!"

She gritted her teeth, her expression turning resolute.

"So we’re putting on a show, is that it? Mom’s in! I’ll make my part completely believable! I can even squeeze out a few tears! I’ll call your dad later and fill him in, so he doesn’t lose his cool and worry needlessly when the rumors start flying."

Looking at her mother’s anxious yet earnest expression, Song Qingya felt a warmth spread through her chest, and her eyes began to sting.

She nodded gently.

"Okay. Thanks, Mom."

After explaining everything to Liu Li, she felt a great weight lift from her shoulders.

Seeing the exhaustion on her face, Fei Jin said softly, "You should lie down for a while."

He then carefully bent down and gently lifted her into his arms.

He tucked her in, then sat sideways on the edge of the bed, gazing down at her.

Then, he reached out and carefully lifted her pajama top, revealing her flat, soft stomach.

He leaned down slightly, pressing his ear gently against her skin, holding his breath as he listened.

The room was perfectly still, the only sound their even breaths.

Song Qingya watched him with a smile.

She didn’t stop him, simply propping her head on her hand and watching his every move with amusement.

After listening for a long while, Fei Jin’s brow furrowed slightly.

Suddenly, he put on a stern face and whispered a warning to her stomach.

"Hey, little one in there, listen up! Your mom is very tired and needs her rest! You need to behave yourself. No mischief, no kicking or flipping around, and absolutely no making a fuss in the middle of the night! Got it? You have to be good, understand?"

Seeing his dead-serious expression, Song Qingya almost burst out laughing.

Fei Jin placed his hand gently on her stomach, his fingertips slowly stroking the fabric of her pajamas.

"Qingya, forget everything else for a moment... even if one day something really does go wrong, you have to take care of yourself first. I know you always put others before yourself, but no matter how important this baby is, they can never come before you. You’re my everything, you understand?"

The smile on Song Qingya’s face gradually faded.

She stared at him, a bittersweet warmth filling her heart.

She reached out and slowly caressed his face.

"Ajin..."

Fei Jin said nothing, only tightening his grip on her hand and lacing their fingers together.

"I’m serious."

"In this world, nothing is more important than you. Parents, career, responsibilities... even our unborn child. In my eyes, none of it even comes close to you."

Song Qingya’s gaze was infinitely gentle, her eyelashes trembling slightly.

She nodded silently, not saying another word.

Because she knew some feelings were simply too deep for words.

Fei Jin leaned in closer.

He gently rested his forehead against hers, their noses nearly touching.

"Once this busy period is over, when things at the hospital are on track and the situation with Yang Meiling is handled, I’ll take a few days off and take you away to relax, okay? We’ll find a quiet place with no social obligations, no meetings, and no urgent phone calls. Just the two of us, getting some proper rest for a few days."

Hearing this, Song Qingya tilted her head, thought for a moment, and then gently shook her head.

"A trip isn’t necessary. I just took over, so this is a critical time for me to familiarize myself with everything and learn the procedures. I can’t be careless about any of the details. I don’t want to go anywhere."

After a pause, she blinked, and her tone shifted, taking on a teasing note.

"But... if you’re really taking a vacation, why not come help me out? I happen to need someone to run errands, who’s obedient and not lazy. Wouldn’t you say you’re the perfect person for the job?"

Fei Jin froze, stunned for a couple of seconds.

Then, he couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

"Is this your roundabout way of putting me to work?"

He immediately sat bolt upright, his back ramrod straight, and raised his right hand in a mock-serious salute.

"As you command, Dean Song!"

His sudden antics made Song Qingya laugh out loud.

She gave him a light push, her tone half-reproachful, half-doting.

"Oh, you. Can’t you be serious for a moment? Stop goofing around in the middle of the night!"

Fei Jin used the momentum of the push to fall against her, his body pressing close.

He expertly wrapped one arm around her, pulling her into his embrace, while his other hand settled on her waist.

"Okay, okay, I’ll stop messing around. This little moment of sweetness tonight is enough to keep me going for days."

He whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin.

"Go to sleep, my great Director. You have an early meeting tomorrow, and the entire hospital is counting on you."

Song Qingya rested against his firm chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart. She shifted contentedly, found the most comfortable position, and closed her eyes.

A faint smile played on her lips, and her voice was muffled but full of contentment. "Mmm... With you here, I’m not afraid."

「Meanwhile.」

The hospital’s inpatient building was brightly lit.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!

A monitor suddenly blared an alarm!

Bright red numbers flashed erratically, the blood oxygen level plummeted, and the heart rate line oscillated wildly.

The row of green numbers on the screen, once pulsing steadily, were now rapidly turning a glaring red.
