Chapter 39 - New trait
Chapter 39 - New trait
Seven months later, Shu Yang was once again pacing outside his bedroom with an anxious look on his face.
“Dad, do you really need to be so worried?” Tianan asked.
“What do you know? Just be quiet,” Shu Yang scolded.
“Don’t try to reason with him,” Tianren said to his brother in a low voice, “Just wait for it to be over, and he’ll be back to normal.”
‘These kids…’
Shu Yang suddenly noticed that Tianyue was sitting on the couch in the living room with a pale face.
“What are you doing out here?” Shu Yang asked.
“I…It’s too much. I can’t handle it, Dad,” Tianyue said, shaking her head.
Shu Yang frowned slightly. He had sent Tianyue to the bedroom as no men were allowed inside. He hoped she might pick up a few skills from Ma Rue, so their family wouldn’t need her help in the future. But it looks like his sons will have no choice but to submit to Ma Rue’s tyranny in the future.
‘Damn that Ma Rue. She shows respect on ordinary days, but as soon as she delivers a baby, she even dares to scold an Innate warrior.’
Unfortunately, there was nothing Shu Yang could do. He didn’t know much about delivering babies, so he had to give in to Ma Rue’s demands. He couldn’t risk Qianyue’s safety.
Time went by, and Shu Yang was in a state of constant worry, as he always was when his wife was giving birth.
Then, suddenly, a rush more powerful than Shu Yang had ever experienced coursed through his body. His blood was pumping, his eyes stung, and his senses seemed all out of tune for a moment. Shu Yang put his hand against the wall, trying to stabilize himself.
“Dad, are you okay? It seems like the baby is out,” Tianren said, looking at him worriedly.
“Ah? Right,” Shu Yang said, blinking his eyes as they gradually stopped hurting. Looking at his son’s face, Shu Yang thought something was different about him.
‘Did he always look like this?’
Shu Yang turned around and looked across the room. A lot of details that had previously been impossible to make out were now standing out as clear as day.
‘This…Did I receive a new trait? Good eyesight?’
‘I’ll sense the details carefully later.’
Shu Yang didn’t bother investigating for the moment; he first rushed inside the bedroom to make sure his wife was alright.
Stepping inside, he saw his wife smiling, her cheeks flushed, holding a small baby who was struggling slightly in her arms.
“Did everything go well?” Shu Yang asked, relaxing slightly as he saw his wife’s rosy cheeks.
“I’m fine,” Qianyue answered with a bright smile, “Look, husband. It really is another daughter.”
“That’s great,” Shu Yang said, genuinely excited to have another daughter around the house again. He waved off Ma Rue and her daughter after paying them, and then lay down beside his wife.
“Look at her eyes, aren’t they very clear? It looks like she will grow up to be a very clever girl just like her sister,” Qianyue said.
‘They seem…a little sharp to me.’ Shu Yang thought to himself. It almost seemed like his daughter was looking at him with suspicion.
“I’m your Dad, little girl,” Shu Yang said, gently caressing his daughter’s cheek. His daughter’s eyes seemed a little less sharp all of a sudden.
‘Did I imagine it?’
“What should we call her?” Qianyue asked.
“Do you have a name you like?” Shu Yang asked.
“Well, what do you think about Tianyi?” Qianyue asked.
“It suits her,” Shu Yang nodded with a smile.
“Good. I think so too,” Qianyue said, smiling widely. It seemed all her worries about being too old to have another daughter had vanished.

Shu Yang talked with Qianyue until she grew tired, and closed her eyes to rest.
Shu Yang gave his wife a quick kiss before closing his eyes too, focusing on his connection to the Bloodline Tree.
‘Let’s try to get a sense of what makes my daughter so special.’
[ Name: Shu Tianyi ]
[ Bloodline Power: 2.07 (Mortal - High) ]
[ Traits: Good martial arts talent, Piercing Gaze, Nature Sensitivity ]
‘What!?’
Shu Yang's head flew up from his pillow, and he looked closely at his daughter. He had almost yelled out loud in shock.
‘How come she has so many new traits? Is she just lucky? Or did I do something differently this time around?’
Shu Yang thought about it, but he couldn’t recall anything special happening.
‘Whatever. Either way, it’s a good thing.’
Not only had his daughter brought two new traits to his bloodline, but she also had a higher grade of martial arts talent.
Shu Yang almost couldn’t stop himself from running outside to see the effect of his training now that his talent had increased, but he held himself back. There was plenty of time for that later.
‘I guess my talent might have increased in grade after a few more grandchildren either way. But these traits are different. Just what do they do?’
Piercing Gaze was at least fairly obvious. Shu Yang could tell that his eyesight was a lot better. But there should be something more to it that he had yet to discover.
‘I’ll have to test my eyesight and see the trait's limits. Can I see through walls?’
Shu Yang looked across the room and tried to pierce through the wall and see what was behind it, but even after a few minutes of intense staring, nothing happened. Shu Yang also vaguely felt that this wasn’t quite the use of his new trait.
‘Whatever, I’ll figure it out eventually. And if not me, I’m sure Tianyi will be able to figure something out with it. She was born with it, after all. I might have some preconceived notions that make it harder to realize what I can and cannot do.’
Finally, Shu Yang turned his attention to his daughter’s third trait.
‘Nature Sensitivity? What does that mean?’
Shu Yang looked at his wife, sleeping with their daughter against her chest, and carefully got up from the bed. He went up to the window and looked at the grass and trees outside.
‘Nothing.’
Shu Yang was too curious to sit still. He climbed out the window and ran up to the nearest tree, putting his hand against it.
One minute passed. Then another.
‘I really can’t feel anything special. Did I get it wrong?’
Shu Yang didn’t really get the actual facts in writing from the Bloodline Tree, it was more of a way for him to understand and keep track of his bloodline. But it was all only derived by Shu Yang himself to the best of his ability.
‘I’d like to think that my connection to the Bloodline Tree is pretty seamless now. But I guess I can try to dig a little deeper.’
Shu Yang went back to his bedroom and sat down cross-legged next to his sleeping wife.
Closing his eyes, he could vaguely see the Bloodline Tree inside his sea of consciousness.
‘It’s a little clearer than it used to be?’
The Bloodline Tree wasn’t exactly planted in a glade where Shu Yang could wander around. It was only hovering inside his mind, and Shu Yang always had to concentrate to visualize it before him.
This time, however, things were a little different. Before, seeing the Bloodline Tree was more like when he heard someone say a word, for example, ‘apple,’ and he would have the image of an apple appear inside his mind. But now, it felt like he was actually seeing the Bloodline Tree in front of him with his own two eyes.
‘Is this because of Piercing Gaze? Or has something else changed?’
Shu Yang let the matter go for the moment and focused on the traits he had just received from his daughter, trying to sense what exactly had changed about him.
His connection to the Bloodline Tree allowed him to sense if he was right or wrong about something. It was just like when he deduced his martial art, slowly but steadily, he could be guided to the correct information stored somewhere within the Bloodline Tree.
The minutes passed, and soon an hour had gone by, and Shu Yang finally felt he was close to finding the true answer.
‘Could it be?’
Shu Yang’s heart started beating faster and faster.
‘It really is!’
Finally, he saw his trait Nature Sensitivity for what it truly was, and the result couldn’t have made him happier.
[ Name: Shu Yang ]
[ Bloodline Power: 5.98 (Mortal - High) ]
[ Traits: Good martial art talent, Clear Mind, Piercing Gaze, Trash-grade spiritual roots ]
‘Spiritual roots! I actually have spiritual roots!’
Shu Yang had never heard anyone mention spiritual roots in this world before. Only in stories were there signs of Immortals cultivating spiritual energy, allowing them to gain incredible power. But now, the Bloodline Tree had confirmed that he had spiritual roots. It had to mean that there was spiritual energy as well.
‘It might only be the lowest grade of spiritual roots. But that’s more than enough for now. I guess there isn’t much spiritual energy in this area, or I would definitely have heard of it. But perhaps if I travel across the Northern Mountains, I can reach a completely different world, with abundant spiritual energy.’
Shu Yang turned to look at his daughter and couldn’t help but be amazed by her talent. She would definitely grow up to become extraordinary.
‘I need to find some resources for her to develop her talents not only in martial arts, but in cultivation as well. It’s fine for me to take it slow; my spiritual roots will definitely reach a higher grade in the future. But it’s different for Tianyi.’
Shu Yang took a deep breath, calming himself down.
‘Alright. One step at a time. I need to think things through and plan carefully so that my family can have the best life possible.’
‘For now, I need to keep focusing on my connection to the Bloodline Tree. It seems there is a lot more to be gained from my connection to it than I had previously thought. I wonder if any other traits have a deeper meaning to them?’
