Chapter 99: Judgment Day Choosing Love Anyway
Chapter 99: Judgment Day Choosing Love Anyway
Maya looked up, her gaze sharp as she scanned his face. "Hey," she replied, her eyes narrowing slightly. "What took you so long? Do you have a visitor?"
Adrian was caught off guard by the question, but he gathered his courage and answered, "Yes... my boyfriend is here."
Maya’s head snapped up, her eyes widening in shock at the blunt answer.
She stared at her brother in stunned silence, her mouth parting as if to speak, but no words came.
She just went still, trying to process what she had just heard.
Adrian took a seat across from her, his hands clasped tightly to hide his trembling.
Finally, Maya found her voice. "Can I have a word with him?"
"Yes," Adrian replied. "But only if you tell me what you’re planning to say to him first. You haven’t even reacted to what I just told you."
Maya bristled. "Are you saying you don’t trust me?"
"I trust you, sis," Adrian said. "But I’m terrified things will fall apart if you go to him before you really process what this means to me. I can’t let that happen... not until I know where you stand."
Maya let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "What do you expect me to say? How am I supposed to react?"
She shook her head, still stunned.
"You know there’s no way this is going to be accepted. How are you going to tell Father? How do you think he’ll react when he finds out you’re with a man?"
"I’m not expecting acceptance," Adrian said quietly. "And I’m not asking for permission either. I’m telling you the truth because you deserve to know. I’m with a man. I love him. And I want a future with him."
"Will you just keep quiet and stop spouting this nonsense?" Maya shouted, her voice echoing in the room.
"I love him," Adrian repeated, his tone unwavering. "And I want to be with him."
Maya threw her hands up, pacing the floor. "I understand you might not want to be with Iris, but why a man? Why would you choose this?" She spun around, her voice rising again. "And who is this man? Who are we even talking about?"
Adrian hesitated. He didn’t want to say Matteo’s name; he knew his sister would immediately judge him based on the dangerous reputation that followed Matteo everywhere. So, he stayed silent.
Maya stopped pacing and glared at him. "Are you even happy? You can’t even proudly say his name. What is wrong with you, Adrian?"
"I am proud of him," Adrian said. "I just didn’t want you to judge him based on the rumors you’ve heard. He’s truly a good man."
Maya scoffed, her eyes cold. "Then say his name. If he’s that good, say it."
"He’s Matteo Marcone," Adrian let out.
Maya recoiled as if she’d been struck. "You are unbelievable. Out of every man in this city, you chose that devil?"
"No, Maya, you’re wrong," Adrian insisted, leaning forward. "He’s a good man. You have to believe me."
"What kind of lies did he feed you to make you think that?" Maya demanded, her voice rising. "What has he done to you? What did he say to brainwash you?"
"Please, Maya, can you not—"
"Enough!" she snapped, cutting him off. "Do you even have any idea how dangerous that man is?"
"I know," Adrian replied quietly.
Maya stared at him, her expression shifting from anger to genuine horror. "You know... and you still chose to stay?" She stared at him like she couldn’t recognize him anymore.
Her voice rose, disbelief clear. "Are you out of your mind? What did he say to you? What did he do to you?" She shook her head, her eyes searching his.
"You deserve the best, Adrian... not him. Not someone the whole city fears."
She looked at him. "What is wrong with you?"
"I love him, Maya," Adrian said, meeting her eyes.
Maya shook her head immediately. "Love? Love is not enough to keep a man like him. You’re living in a fantasy if you think that’s all it takes."
She softened her tone, though the frustration still lingered in her voice. "I’m not saying this because I want to force you to be with a woman. I’m saying it because, even if you choose to be with a man, Matteo is the wrong choice for you."
She held his gaze, her expression pleading. "You could choose anyone else... any other man in this world. Just not him."
Adrian leaned forward, frustration slipping into his voice. "Maya, you always said we shouldn’t judge people by appearances. But that’s exactly what you’re doing right now...judging him based on what you’ve heard."
"It isn’t just what I’ve heard, Adrian," she retorted. "It’s what I clearly know to be true about him."
Adrian looked at her, his eyes glistening. "Are you saying I can’t be with him just because of who he was in the past?"
"Please... don’t tell me to leave him," he said softly. "If he’s really the ’devil’ you think he is, why hasn’t he hurt me? Why has he only ever cared for me?"
He held her gaze. "He’s changed, Maya. He’s a good man."
A tear slipped down Maya’s cheek, her voice trembling. "Why does it have to be him? I don’t want to say no... but I care about you. I’m scared his past will come back to haunt you. It’s too dangerous."
"Trust me," Adrian said, stepping forward and pulling his sister into a tight hug. "He protects me. Nothing like that will ever happen. You’re all I have, Maya. Please, give him a chance."
Maya closed her eyes, sobbing against his shoulder. After a long moment, she pulled back, wiping her eyes. "Fine. I will accept him, but on one condition."
"What is it? I’ll do anything," Adrian said.
"Call him downstairs," Maya said. "I need to talk to him. Trust me, I’m not here to break you two apart. If I wanted to do that, I would have stepped in the moment I saw you kissing him outside your gate."
Adrian blinked in shock. "Maya... you knew?"
"Yes, I knew," she said, cupping his face. "I saw it, but I stayed quiet."
"I’m so sorry to disappoint—"
"No, it’s okay," she interrupted gently. "You have nothing to be ashamed of, Adrian. All I care about is your happiness."
She softened. "I actually spoke to Charles... and he told me Matteo is really changing, for you. He said I should trust him."
Adrian was stunned. "You talked to Charles?"
"Yes. Iris came to me a few days ago, trying to stir up trouble about your relationship. I didn’t give her the reaction she wanted, but after she left... I couldn’t stop worrying."
She exhaled softly. So I called Charles.
He was calm and easy to talk to. He told me I had nothing to worry about. Even Frank admitted that, although he still has his concerns, he couldn’t deny it... Matteo is a completely different person when he’s with you. They both reassured me that he’s a good man."
She took a breath. "I’m still worried, but if you bring him down... I only want a conversation. Nothing more."
Adrian smiled, relief washing over him. "Alright, sis. I’ll go get him."
Before Adrian headed upstairs, he paused and turned back to her.
"Iris... that devil in makeup, what does she want from me?" he said, frustration slipping into his voice. "I already told her I don’t want anything to do with her."
He shook his head, exhaling. "There’s something you need to know about her... but right now, my boyfriend is my priority. I’ll be back."
Maya watched him, a small smile forming as she shook her head lightly.
"Alright," she said, a soft smile forming as she watched her once-broken brother turning into a lovestruck man. "I’ll be waiting."
He rushed upstairs, his heart light.
He found Matteo already showered and dressed, looking calm and composed.
Adrian walked toward him. "Hey, baby... I’m sorry for keeping you waiting."
Matteo pulled him closer by the waist. "It’s okay, baby." He looked at him. "Is she gone?"
Adrian shook his head. "No. My sister wants to speak with you."
Matteo didn’t show a flicker of fear. He simply nodded. "Alright, babe. Let’s go."
Even Adrian paused for a second, studying him.
Matteo looked completely ready. He was completely ready to face Maya.
Without another word, he followed Adrian downstairs.
