Chapter 40: I Predicted Your Prediction! First Running Man Reward!
“Hahaha… The White Team only has Baby left! Baby, why don’t you challenge 1.2 meters? Or maybe two-thirds of 2.4 meters—that’s 1.8 meters?” Chen Hehe burst into laughter and made his suggestion.
Wang Zulan immediately chimed in, “For the girls’ team, challenging 2.4 meters is a great choice!”
Shen Lang reminded him, “Zulan, the shortest challenge for the guys is 1.8 meters. So… your 2.4-meter attempt won’t count!”
Wang Zulan: “…” His world collapsed.
Baby said, “Zulan, this round is the girls’ final showdown. So… I’ll play it safe and go for 2.3 meters to secure a point for the White Team!”
“Exactly! Baby’s making the right call. Challenge 2.3 meters and get us that point!” Shen Lang shouted from below, fully supporting her.
“Alright, Baby starts her challenge! The lane is wide, and she’s running fast! Go, Baby! Steady now… Baby crosses the line! She succeeds! White Team scores one point!”
“Great job, Baby! The White Team wins!”
Shen Lang roared with laughter—his plan had worked.
Lu Han joined in, celebrating the White Team’s victory in advance.
Seeing this, Chen Hehe felt a bad premonition. He quickly said, “Next up, the Blue Team! You guys go first. Let’s see if Zulan will challenge 1.8 meters, 2.4 meters, or maybe even 1.2 meters!”
“Zulan, prove you’re a man! The choice is yours!”
Provoked, Wang Zulan shouted, “Fine! I’ll challenge 1.8 meters!”
“Zulan, are you even a man anymore?” Shen Lang, Deng Chao, and Lu Han taunted from the water, trying to push him to attempt 1.2 meters.
Wang Zulan pulled his headband down over his ears, pretending not to hear, and declared again, “I challenge 1.8 meters!”
Unsurprisingly, Wang Zulan failed—he fell, wasting his shameless effort.
“Zulan, if you knew you’d fail, why even give up being a man?” Deng Chao mocked.
“Alright, next up—Chen Ge! If you’re a real man, go for 1.2 meters!”
“Big Black Bull, are you a man or not?”
“Chen Ge, 1.2 meters!”
Shen Lang, Deng Chao, and Lu Han kept shouting.
Li Chen sighed but still declared, “I challenge 1.2 meters!” And, predictably, he failed.
“Next, welcome Blue Team’s Du Jiang!”
“Du Jiang, a real man should—”
Before they could finish, Du Jiang cut in, “I challenge 1.2 meters!” And, once again, he failed.
“Coach Li Yi, surely you don’t want to—”
Before Shen Lang could finish, Li Yi said firmly, “1.2 meters!”
“Nice! The Blue Team’s got guts!”
Shen Lang and Deng Chao exchanged a glance—their strategy had worked.
Chen Hehe: “…”
Why wasn’t there a next step?
The more this went on, the more uneasy he felt.
Li Yi also failed, leaving the Blue Team with zero points.
“Hahaha…”
Deng Chao and Shen Lang laughed triumphantly. “Red Team, you’re the last ones left. Hurry up… A real man should let the ladies go first, so… Little Leopard, you’re up!”
Shen Lang added, “I already called out the Leopard earlier. No need to say who—you know who you are!”
Zheng Kai, easily provoked, immediately shouted, “I’ll also challenge 1.2 meters!”
Though the Little Leopard was fast, he still got pushed into the water.
“Hahaha! Next up… Chen Hehe, you wanna go?”
Chen Hehe said, “Let Coach Fan go first. I’ll take the last spot.”
Fan Zhiyi didn’t hesitate. “I’ll challenge 1.2 meters—same as everyone else.”
Before starting, he reminded Yang Mi, “Mi Mi, you need to challenge 2.2 meters. Just one point more than the White Team is enough.”
Yang Mi nodded in understanding—the final result rested on her.
Fan Zhiyi failed his 1.2-meter challenge.
“Chen Hehe, as a man, shouldn’t you prove yourself?”
Deng Chao, Shen Lang, and Lu Han started chanting again.
“Enough already!”
Chen Hehe still felt something was off, but his male pride made him choose 1.2 meters.
Wang Zulan could attempt 1.5 meters—his persona allowed it. But Chen Hehe’s image didn’t support that.
“Alright, challenge failed! Now, let’s welcome our final contestant—Yang Mi!”
“Mi Jie, go for 1.8 meters! You can do it!” Shen Lang shouted.
“2.2 meters!”
Yang Mi covered her ears, refusing to listen.
“Alright, Mi Mi starts running—she’s fast!”
Deng Chao splashed water toward Yang Mi as she ran, and Shen Lang and Lu Han joined in, trying to distract her with the spray.
Seeing this, Chen Hehe finally understood—this was the White Team’s plan all along.
“Director, I protest!” Chen Hehe yelled. “The White Team is interfering with our player!”
Shen Lang retorted, “The rules don’t forbid it! So… Mi Jie, keep going!”
Chen Hehe: “???”
Once Yang Mi crossed the halfway point, Shen Lang, Deng Chao, and Lu Han moved under the track. Suddenly, Shen Lang jumped up and sat on the runway, blocking Yang Mi’s return path.
Seeing this, Chen Hehe panicked and rushed onto the track. “Director, look—”
Before he could finish, Shen Lang dove back into the water and shrugged. “Hehe, you’re the one blocking Mi Jie now!”
I predicted your prediction! Shen Lang thought smugly.
Chen Hehe: “…Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing?”
His mind went blank as he and Yang Mi were both pushed into the water.
“SHEN LANG!!!” Yang Mi screamed, lunging at him to retaliate.
Chen Hehe snapped out of it and started searching for Shen Lang.
“Hahaha! The White Team wins again!” Shen Lang swam underwater, resurfacing at the edge of the pool. He raised his arms victoriously. “Who’s next?!”
SPLASH!
The moment he spoke, Li Chen and Zheng Kai teamed up to shove him back into the water.
“Shen Lang, you’ve pissed off everyone,” Li Chen said before jumping in after him.
A full-on water battle erupted, with Deng Chao and Lu Han joining Shen Lang’s side.
This round ended with the White Team winning by one point.
After the game, they returned to the hotel to shower and change before heading to the next location—a school—for the final segment of the episode.
The last challenge was a soccer match against elementary school students. The goal? Score against a defense of 100 young football players.
Each team had a special guest star:
Blue Team: Zhao Yixiong (2017 Zhejiang Super League MVP)
Red Team: Li Jiayue (2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Chinese national team starter)
White Team: Luís Figo (Portuguese football legend)
After introducing the guests, the director had Figo perform a stunt—kicking a ball through a car window (partly for sponsor promotion, partly to justify his appearance fee).
The three teams then took turns facing off against the 100 young defenders.
With so many players, the details of the final game were glossed over, fast-forwarding to the results:
White Team: 4 points
Red Team: 4 points
Blue Team: 5 points
The Blue Team won this episode, earning official tickets to the 2018 World Cup.
As Running Man Season 2, Episode 8 wrapped up, Shen Lang finally received his system reward.
