Chapter 238 238: Clone And Teleport
Chapter 238 238: Clone And Teleport
Have you ever received a toy that you always wanted? One that once in your hands, the entire world around you would immediately fade.
Hunger, time and everything else would become irrelevant or rather, they would just fade away.
That was the closest to what Ethan felt when the teleportation rings successfully appeared inside his lab.
Two days, that's exactly how much time had passed since he created them and he had been running endless tests on it.
So much so that he had ignored the system notification and calls from both Lillian and Irina.
"Teleporter test 903," Ethan muttered to himself as he added, "me."
He had tried to teleport every single thing he could get his hands on, and that ranged from inanimate to biological things and the results were always positive.
Both their physical, chemical and quantum properties always remained the same, telling that the object he threw in was the same that came out.
And he was finally ready for the final test, the human test.
Now he could just ask for a disposable mercenary from Helix Global, but that would just delay the results for at least a few so he just decided to do it himself.
"Alright then, ready?" He turned around instead of walking directly into the portal.
Behind him stood a human that was a complete copy of himself down to the smallest strands of hair.
Ethan ignoring the system notifications wasn't exactly right, after all he had opened the system shop and purchased a blueprint.
[Cloning Pod (tier 6)]
The system had finally allowed him access to tier 5 tech, and the first thing he bought was that.
Thanks to the TDI's upgrade, he didn't need to request and wait for a couple of days for the materials needed to build the pod.
Within a few minutes of uploading the blue print into TDI's idea incubator, a fully functional Cloning pod was before him.
All that was missing was an energy source which was solved with Ethan's infinite energy orbs.
And with just a bit of his biological information, his blood, an exact replica of himself stood before him.
The only difference between the two was the fact that the clone's eyes were blank, almost as if it had no soul... Because it didn't.
This was just an empty shell that was only good enough for organ transplants, or that's what most would believe, but that wasn't the case for Ethan Carter.
ONI allowed him to split his mind into multiple sections, and also ensure that his brain didn't melt from the sheer amount of information it contained.
But what if it could also allow him to transfer one of those minds into something else...in this case an empty shell.
That idea might sound ridiculous, impossible even, but that's where his title [Innovator of the impossible] came to play.
It showed him a clear road map of how he would achieve this, and Ethan immediately went to work.
The solution was another version of one, one that acted like a receiver, well, rather than 'act' like a receiver, it was actually one.
Once fixed in the clone's Iris, ONI automatically connects to the receiver, allowing Ethan to assign a single mind to the clone.
He wasn't sure how controlling two bodies would work out, but he was about to find out soon enough.
With a thought, he activated ONI, and his eyes started glowing blue, so did the clone's.
A couple of seconds later, a holographic screen popped up before Ethan.
[Connection successfully established.]
The moment the text popped up, Ethan suddenly felt a weird sense of vertigo and the moment it faded, his brain was trying to process multiple new information being transmitted to it.
"So this is what it feels like," Ethan spoke out, but the words didn't come from his own mouth, but clones.
The clone's pupils shrank, taking on their normal size rather than the empty look previously in them.
It was a weird feeling, looking at himself from two different perspectives, it felt like trying to spin your hands in opposite direction, but a lot weirder.
Ethan couldn't say it felt like looking at a mirror either, since he could move both bodies independent of each other and the first thing he did was try and high five himself?
The action worked pretty well because of his multiple mind partition and because he was used to controlling two minds at once.
Both Ethan and his clone turned towards the teleporter before the original him muttered, "alright then, let's see how this goes."
If the clone ended up being turned into a puddle, all that pain would be transferred to the original him alongside the mind placed in it, which wouldn't be so bad....
"Here it goes," the clone muttered with a sigh and walked closer and closer to the teleporter before finally walking in.
The first thing Ethan felt was a bit of chill down his spine.
Seeing the blue glow in the teleportation ring from two different perspectives all at once was fascinating, but he didn't get lost in that fascination.
Instead, the clone walked forward into the teleportation ring and the blue glow in it rippled a bit as he disappeared.
And that's when a weird sensation hit Ethan. Since he was prioritizing the mind inside the clone right now, the sensations it received were clear as day to him.
If he had to put what he was feeling into words, he would just say, "weird."
He felt himself everywhere and nowhere at once, his entire body felt like streams of data rather than a complete biological form which was being sent towards a targeted location.
But all that happened under a second and the next moment he was out the other teleporter.
To any other person, it'd just feel like they stepped into one ring and they came out the other end.
Ethan was only aware of those sensations because his brain wasn't ignoring all that stream of information.
"Ethan?" Before he could check if his clone's body was completely fine, a voice called out from the side.
He had been so absorbed in the tests that he hadn't even realized when someone stepped into his lab, much less his apartment.
Standing to the side was a wide eyed Lillian as her gaze alternated between the Ethan in a lab coat and the clone in just boxer.
After a couple of silent minutes, Lillian let out a sigh before placing a hand on her forehead, "Aria was right, I really do need some sleep."
"You're not hallucinating," Ethan, the original one, spoke up ans he slowly took off the gloves and walked towards her.
"Oh really," Lillian asked, "then why are there two of you."
"Because I created a clone of me," he answered, now standing directly in front of her, "though it's more like a second body for me."
"Second body?" Lillian asked as she looked towards the clone.
"Hmm," the clone nodded as it explained, "since it's just an empty shell, one of my minds currently operate within and it's as if I'm controlling a mech suit, the only difference being the mech suit is also actually me."
Lillian stared at them, then rubbed her temples again, "so let me get this straight. You didn't just clone your body, you also… distributed your consciousness across it."
"Yes," Ethan said.
"And you're fully aware of what both of you are seeing, hearing and feeling?"
"Yes."
"And that doesn't hurt?"
The clone tilted his head, considering the question.
"There's a slight cognitive strain, similar to intense multitasking, but ONI handles most of the load balancing."
Lillian looked at the clone, "sou're way too calm about this."
"So are you," he paused, recalling her earlier expression before adding, "statistically speaking."
"I'm still trying to figure out the expression to make," she replied.
Ethan just chuckled in response before extending his hand, "let's go get something to eat while I continue running some tests on the clone after that teleportation."
"Teleportation?" Lillian froze at the new information before her eyes finally landed on the teleportation ring, "what the hell were you doing in two days?"
"A lot," Ethan said with a chuckle, "I'll explain later, for now, I'm a bit hungry, after all, I haven't had anything to eat in the past two days."
Lillian looked at the clone, then back at Ethan, still finding it hard to believe that this was real before she sighed and said, "fine."
With that, they left clone Ethan to his devices as he continued his tests, one of them though, was an important question,
Could he still use the system in this body?
