Chapter 446 - 445: I Don’t Know Who They’re Helping, But It’s Not Me
A black chick cub and Little Jing were practically nose to nose. The chick tilted its head, chirped twice with its tender yellow beak, and cheerfully flapped over to nuzzle her face. Then, it eagerly squatted down, craned its neck, and opened its mouth wide, chirping for food.
The male cubs??!!
Meanwhile, the other black chick cub’s eyes landed on the group of male cubs. It tilted its head blankly. ’So many Mothers? Which one should I flap over to?’
And so, it flapped over to every single male cub. But before they could even react, in less than three seconds, the black chick cub had already moved on to the next one.
After making the rounds with all the "Mothers" in sight, the little one wagged its tail, glanced at its nestmate, and proudly craned its neck to let out a loud CHIRP!
’One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight Mothers! They can feed me much more than just one Mother. So many Mothers, so much to be proud of.’
The other cubs didn’t overthink it. They were all grinning, overjoyed that the black chick cubs had hatched, and started asking their Father for feed.
Zhi Le glanced at the two black chick cubs and handed the other cubs two basins of glistening golden millet soaked in warm water. However, the two new chicks didn’t even look at it. They just craned their necks, waiting to be fed.
Si Shuo hurriedly asked the group of males for help. Just then, Yin Jiang had a free moment and Teleported over. He peeked in, raised an eyebrow, and asked, "Two crows?" ’So after all that fuss, the cubs hatched a pair of crow chicks?’
The two black chick cubs glanced at each other, and both saw the disdain in the other’s eyes. ’You’re the crow! Your whole family are crows! We’re white!’
Since the black chick cubs couldn’t speak yet, the other cubs had all equipped their Little Hong Brand Mind Reading Technique to understand their needs. ??!! ’Wait, so each of the black chick cubs thinks the *other* one is the black one?’
"This kind needs to be fed meat," Yin Jiang, who was more experienced, explained to the cubs. "You just need to catch mice or small birds, shred the meat, and feed it to them."
Xuyou immediately took out a piece of fresh beef. "Father, will this work?"
Yin Jiang nodded. "That’s fine. Just remember to feed them small meals frequently. When they stop opening their mouths for more, you can stop. Check on them again in half a Beast Hour or a full one..."
He earnestly shared his experience with the cubs. And so, they all became little daddies, bustling about to serve the black chick cubs.
Since time was tight and they had their own studies and training to attend to, the cubs continued to take turns caring for the new chicks under the effects of the Time Law.
Once Yin Jiang was done, Si Shuo raised his hand. "Yin Jiang, do you know if they’re female or male cubs?"
In the past, Yin Jiang would have declared them male cubs without a second thought. After all, it was a rule on the Beast World Continent that females couldn’t take beast form. But in their family, aside from Xuyou, every other female cub could!
He was in a tough spot, too. The main issue was that these two little black things were Beastmen; they couldn’t really be treated like ordinary chicks.
To tell a chick’s gender, you have to pick it up and inspect it...
Before they could agonize over it any longer, Little Jing reached out, grabbed both black chick cubs to inspect them, and calmly placed the dazed-looking one in front of her brothers. "Yours is a female cub."
Then she placed the one that was flapping furiously in her hand—looking utterly mortified—in front of herself. "And mine is a male cub!"
Seeing everyone staring at her, she blinked. "I can tell female and male cubs apart. That’s how Big Face Flower does it!
"Or am I not allowed to look? One of them is either going to be my brothers’ child bride or my child husband, so it’s perfectly appropriate for me to be the one looking!"
’Another child husband?!’ Gong You, who had just Teleported back, nearly tripped over his own feet.
’Wasn’t it supposed to be a child bride? Why am I getting dragged into this with a child son-in-law?!’ Gong You’s fists clenched.
The male cubs were ecstatic. Having been the first people the little female cub saw after hatching, they weren’t worried she wouldn’t like them. True, the female cub was a bit dark, but they had hatched her themselves, so their delight was not the least bit diminished. Just as a son never thinks his mother ugly nor a dog minds a poor home, they didn’t mind their future little female’s dark feathers.
After feeding the two black chick cubs, the older cubs watched them smack their beaks contentedly and nestle together to sleep, their own faces beaming with joy.
"Brothers and sisters, let’s give them names, shall we?" the fox cub, Shi Si, suggested.
Si Shuo nibbled on a piece of fruit, simply enjoying the cubs’ performance.
Little Jing smiled and gently tapped the head of her black chick cub. "We have to wait for them to wake up and choose for themselves."
The male cubs exchanged glances. Each had already prepared three to five names they thought sounded beautiful, just waiting for the female black chick to choose one of theirs!
Thanks to the Time Array, the black chick cubs woke up again very quickly, once more craning their necks for food. After eating, they immediately buried their heads and went back to sleep, as if they were exhausted.
The older cubs didn’t have the heart to disturb them. Four Beast Hours went by. With the Time Law accelerating time fifteen-fold, the equivalent of three days had passed for the chicks. They had grown a little, but their black downy feathers hadn’t shed, remaining pitch-black. Only their tender yellow beaks stood out in vibrant contrast.
The black chick cubs were much more energetic now. They no longer fell asleep right after eating. Instead, they would restlessly flap their wings and squirm their way out of the nest.
If the older cubs hadn’t been there, the little ones would have surely taken a tumble.
Little Jing smiled and squatted down as she watched the male black chick, who only ever ran after her. The little guy immediately snuggled against her leg and squatted, too. His obedient and cute appearance made her say happily, "How about I call you Feng Yu? In the word Phoenix, *Feng* represents the male, and *Yu* means feather. I hope our Feng Yu will one day soar through the skies, unburdened by worldly troubles."
It was a good thing their Mother’s legacy had been passed down to them; she had at least a little bit of literary knowledge now.
Feng Yu chirped and rubbed joyfully against her leg.
Whenever Little Jing called his name, Feng Yu would crane his neck and chirp twice in response. They were having a wonderful time playing.
The male cubs’ eyes lit up, and they all turned to look at their female black chick.
"Little female black chick, how about Wusha? Shasha..." As the eldest brother, Xu Ye, who was usually the most hardworking and uncomplaining, was the first to speak up. ’Shasha sounds so fashionable! Mona Lisa, Natasha... they all have that *sha* sound!’
But the little chick let out a chirp and turned her head away, clearly displeased. ’Don’t think I don’t know what that name means! The *Wu* in Wusha is the same character used for crow! He’s just calling me black!’
Tuanzi burst out laughing. "Wusha? Big Brother, why don’t you just call her Black Official’s Hat? Cui Zhu is much prettier! It means emerald pearl. And it sounds like a perfect match for Xue Zhu’s name, like they’re sisters-in-law!"
The little chick chirped, spread her wings, and couldn’t stop herself from pecking at his feet. Tuanzi yelped and ran, but not too fast. He maintained a pace where the female chick could almost—but not quite—catch him.
"’Green Pig ^(* ̄(oo) ̄)^? Haha, Second Brother, that name is way too tacky! Hua Jia is much better..."
And with that, the little chick switched her pecking target. That name was just too awful to hear.
Listening to the male cubs’ naming attempts, Si Shuo facepalmed and muttered to Xiao Cheng, "Since they like those names so much, maybe they should just change their own names instead. What terrible taste. I don’t know who they take after, but it’s definitely not me!"
Xiao Cheng... He gave Shi Si a silent, pointed look. ’If you can’t come up with a name that satisfies the female cub, you can go find yourself a new Father. You’re clearly not on my side in this!’
