Chapter 297 - 298: The Battle of the Steak

Two men, facing each other across the table, one stern, the other with a mischievous smile, yet both with gazes as firm as knives and spears.

Luo Xiaoqian sniffed, smelling the scent of steak but feeling an intense aroma of gunpowder.

Glancing at Jiao Yang, then turning to face Leng Zimo, she cautiously spoke up.

"Can we, perhaps, start with dinner?"

If this continued, the steak on their plates was going to be burned to a crisp.

Leng Zimo shifted his intense gaze from Jiao Yang back to her, and seeing the apologetic, nervous, helpless, and worried look on her face, a sense of guilt rose within him.

Preoccupied with competing against that guy, he hoped he hadn’t terrified the girl.

"Alright, let’s eat!"

Flashing her a smile, he reached for his knife and fork.

Seeing the comfort in his smile, Luo Xiaoqian also cracked a smile, and at the far end of the table, Jiao Yang picked up his knife and fork as well.

Finally, an armistice was called at the dinner table.

Luo Xiaoqian breathed a sigh of relief, bowed her head, and began attacking her steak. Due to these two fellows, she had hardly touched the appetizers or the soup; she was truly very, very hungry.

At both ends of the long table, the movements of Leng Zimo and Jiao Yang were strikingly synchronized.

With one hand holding the knife, the other holding the fork, they sliced through the steak cleanly and quietly, cutting the meat in one swift move. What was crucial was that neither of them actually ate any, instead dividing the steak on their plates into neat little pieces.

Setting down their knife and fork, they lifted their heads and upon seeing the neatly cut meat on each other’s plates, both men paused at the same time. Then each took his plate in one hand and, with the other, reached towards Luo Xiaoqian’s plate.

Luo Xiaoqian had just cut a piece of steak and was about to bring it to her mouth when she saw two hands appear beside her plate—one to the left, one in the center—and suddenly there were two plates of neatly cut steak in front of her.

Chewing on that piece of steak, Luo Xiaoqian truly wanted to poke these two guys with a knife and fork right off the edge of the world.

What a joke, she was starving, yet they were still fighting.

Despite the litany of complaints in her heart, a dry laugh was all she could muster on her face.

"I can manage on my own, really."

Sensing her mood, Leng Zimo’s lips pressed together slightly. He didn’t want to put her in a tough spot, but admitting defeat in front of Jiao Yang was something he absolutely couldn’t accept.

"Eat mine!" he said.

"Xiao Qian, I specifically cut it for you!" Jiao Yang said with a beaming smile.

Luo Xiaoqian chewed the beef in her mouth, sneaking a glance at Leng Zimo, but his look was stubborn and determined.

Knowing he wouldn’t back down in front of Jiao Yang, she turned to Jiao Yang, yet that fellow completely ignored her pleading eyes.

Leng Zimo, she didn’t want to hurt, knowing that with his temperament, if she didn’t eat his steak, he would likely take a significant blow to his pride.

As for Jiao Yang, Luo Xiaoqian also felt apologetic. After all, today’s events were all because of her, and with him actively offering well wishes and gifts, she couldn’t be completely heartless.

Struck by a sudden idea, Luo Xiaoqian simply set her knife and fork down on the table, "This steak is too awful, I don’t want to eat it!"

Unable to finish three plates, and unwilling to embarrass either of them, she had no choice but to make things difficult for herself.

Starving as she was, she still gave up the delicious steak.

The two men looked at each other, then each took back his own plate.
