Chapter 330: Because of a Prophecy
Chapter 330: Because of a Prophecy
While Magnus York had someone change the tires, Nina Jacobs silently glanced at the observation post in the distance.
’It’s not time for the others to come out yet.’
’But I’ll leave markings along the way.’
’The destination is inside the nature reserve. It shouldn’t be too hard for them to find me later.’
The tire was quickly replaced. Magnus York, a few of her people, and Summer Warner all got into one vehicle.
"It seems Veronica Ziegler has been Alistair White’s person all along. She must be the one who revealed our location to them,"
Ben Lawson said.
They had never expected Alistair White to show up here.
Magnus York was silent for a moment before saying, "Veronica Ziegler... She’s not that simple."
Ben Lawson looked at her, confused.
"Come to think of it, you seemed to treat her differently before. She’s just a Space Superpower User, isn’t she?"
Magnus York smiled. "That’s precisely the point. Why would Alistair White recruit an extra Space Superpower User? He already has one he trusts, doesn’t he?"
Ben Lawson finally understood, but at the same time, he was even more confused.
’Just what is Veronica Ziegler’s background?’
Magnus York glanced at the rearview mirror.
Summer Warner, sitting in the back, was looking out the window, seemingly uninterested in their conversation.
Only then did she say, "You should know that the higher-ups have been cooperating with two other factions recently. One of them is always incredibly secretive. All I know is that they’re affiliated with the Mystic Sect."
"What the hell is that?"
Ben Lawson voiced the question on Nina Jacobs’s mind.
’There are multiple factions within The Aegis Conclave?’
Magnus York scoffed. "It’s nothing, really. Probably some remnant of a feudal, superstitious organization. They say they want to use us to find some kind of Mystic Sect heritage.
"Oh, right. I heard they’ve been searching for it for several hundred years."
"Heritage... is it a thing? And what does that have to do with Veronica Ziegler?"
Ben Lawson was completely lost.
"You can think of the Mystic Sect as a large religious organization formed by the various Ancient Martial Clans of Drakonia. It’s said that this heritage manifests in the direct bloodline of these clans—that is, in their heirs."
"The heritage is a treasure everyone wants to get their hands on. Those old fossils have been searching for centuries with no luck. And Veronica Ziegler... she’s likely one of the Mystic Sect,"
Magnus York explained.
"So she came here looking for someone? How would she know that the person with this treasure is here?"
’No wonder Magnus York treated Veronica Ziegler differently from the other mercenaries. So that’s her hidden identity.’
"Because of a prophecy."
Magnus York’s tone made it sound like a joke.
"It says the inheritor will awaken their Superpower here in Mornfell."
"Here? Awaken a Superpower? She actually believes that."
Ben Lawson also found it absurd.
Eryx Rhodes, having listened, also shook his head. "If this heritage was really so amazing, it wouldn’t wait until now for someone to awaken their Superpower, would it?"
"That’s why I can’t figure out why the higher-ups would cooperate with people like that."
Magnus York only knew all this because she had some knowledge of esoteric arts, and some of her contacts claimed to be from Ancient Martial Clans.
’Looking for someone awakening a Superpower in Mornfell?’
Nina Jacobs found it interesting as well.
That would explain why Veronica Ziegler never left Mornfell.
’But for a faction like the Mystic Sect to cooperate with The Aegis Conclave... and what about the other faction Magnus York mentioned?’
"Magnus, those people are catching up. Are we going to travel with them?"
asked Leo Flynn, who was driving.
"We can’t shake them off, they’re like leeches. But he can forget about snatching the prize."
Magnus York’s gaze fell on Summer Warner.
"I see that Miss Warner is not only skilled, but also quite proficient at killing."
"You want me to kill someone?"
Nina asked.
"Not exactly. I was just hoping you could help scare them off,"
Magnus York replied with a smile.
She had seen how Summer Warner killed Anselm Vance just now.
Incredibly fast, a single fatal blow.
’Of course I’d love to kill everyone who gets in the way, but that would make Summer Warner wary of me.’
’As long as she helps me get what I came for first, I can deal with the rest later.’
"Fine."
After Summer Warner replied, Magnus York felt relieved.
Seeing that the road ahead was rugged and strewn with bizarrely shaped rocks, the group had no choice but to get out and proceed on foot.
"Is there a specific location for the thing you’re looking for?"
Nina Jacobs asked after walking for a while. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about this place.
It felt like something was watching them.
"Most likely in a Mutated Animal’s lair. It’s somewhere around here, anyway."
Magnus York took out a small black device. When it extended, it resembled a type of detector Nina Jacobs had seen before.
Not far away, Alistair White and his group, who had just gotten out of their car, were also holding the same kind of device.
Lily Dalton and the other two got out of the second car behind them and came straight over, starting to explain things to Summer Warner:
"That’s a detector they use to find those Energy Stones. It makes a sound when it finds one."
"Yeah, you should still be careful. They’re not good people,"
Ian Nash also said in a low voice.
The three of them seemed worried that Summer Warner would be easily deceived.
"There’s a cave called Gloomfang under this mountain. It’s safe inside. If you can get away, you can rest there tonight."
Nina Jacobs said to the three of them when no one else was paying attention.
"Then what about you..."
The three of them nodded. ’Since Summer Warner is saying this, has she discovered something?’
Before Sebastian Lynch could ask, a scream erupted from behind them.
A man had a short-legged, four-limbed, brown-furred animal perched on his head.
Despite its short legs, it clung tightly to the man’s head, refusing to be pulled off no matter how hard he yanked.
"What is this thing? Get off me!"
As he tore at it with great force, two gashes deep enough to show bone were ripped into the man’s forehead.
The blood seemed to excite the creature even more.
It reared its head back, revealing two rows of small, dense teeth, and then slammed itself down on the man’s crown!
"AGH!"
The man let out a short, sharp scream and then his whole body began to convulse.
The creature had actually bitten right through the man’s skull and was halfway burrowing into his head!
"Is that... a Weasel?!"
Sebastian Lynch said in shock.
"Weasel?"
It was the first time Nina Jacobs had ever heard of such an animal.
Sebastian Lynch nodded. "A Weasel, also known as a Krenth. It’s a small carnivorous animal that reproduces at an astonishing rate. They’re voracious eaters—one can eat over a thousand mice a year—and, and they have ’brain-eating’ tendencies!"
He only remembered this animal when he saw the creature burrowing into the man’s skull.
But he was still unsure. "Weasels may like to eat brains, but I’ve never heard of one attacking a human. Is this really one?"
"Just because they didn’t before, doesn’t mean they don’t now,"
Nina Jacobs said after hearing him.
"Are you saying it might have mutated?"
Lily Dalton couldn’t help but feel her stomach churn.
By now, the man had collapsed completely. The animal finally pulled itself out, chewing on something, its brown fur stained with a suspicious white substance.
A lightning-fast Gold Spike shot out, pinning it to the ground.
Alistair White glanced at the man’s corpse, his expression unchanged, and then ordered, "Stop staring. Keep searching."
