After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Chapter 209: Reason to Suspect

Chapter 209: Reason to Suspect

Adrian Shaw’s expression was one of shock.

"So you’re saying they knew everything that was going to happen to the world from the very beginning?"

He had originally thought it all started when Hannah Grant approached him.

He never imagined it went back to before the apocalypse even began.

No, to be precise, it was from before the acid rain started!

"We have reason to suspect as much, and evidence to back it up."

The whole concept of precognitive dreams sounds fantastical, to say the least.

Furthermore, the interests of the nation and its people were at stake.

He couldn’t just take their word for it based on one or two upcoming events without investigating thoroughly.

Since this was a matter to be reported up the chain, all information on this Liam Grant had to be thoroughly vetted.

Some personal banking and credit data from before the apocalypse was indeed difficult to retrieve.

But the memory storage from surveillance cameras in the ruins and the network of people around him weren’t so hard to look into.

Following the trail of clues, they also took notice of Renee Strong, who was extremely close to Liam Grant.

And, of course, the other members of their team.

However, one of them, a man named Ivan Lawson, was currently missing.

The one named Wyatt Jacobs seemed to have met Liam Grant’s group later on, but it was heard that he had also tried to borrow a million from Nina Jacobs’s mother.

Simon Abbott, on the other hand, had a clean record. He was suddenly contacted by Liam Grant just before the acid rain, and the two had no prior connection.

"When someone’s words don’t match their actions, they’re either a fool or a fraud."

The wrinkles at the corners of his eyes couldn’t hide the coldness in his gaze.

Justin Lawson could understand the caution of an ordinary person; it was indeed difficult for a single individual to change the course of the world.

But using such a thing as bait to manipulate others, even the entire base, made it impossible for him to trust those two at all.

Compared to all the uncertainties, he wouldn’t gamble with the safety of the base.

"Exactly. At the end of the day, they just overestimated themselves and wanted to use the base."

Only then did Adrian Shaw truly realize.

’So Liam Grant was just using me as a pawn.’

"But why did he dump Nina Jacobs before all this and choose Renee Strong instead?" Adrian Shaw mused.

"As for the exact reason, we don’t know either, but there’s only one fundamental cause."

At the mention of Nina Jacobs, Justin Lawson’s expression finally softened.

There was even a hint of pride.

"What cause?" Adrian Shaw asked.

"They’re not the same kind of people."

Ultimately, Nina Jacobs and Liam Grant were polar opposites.

Adrian Shaw felt a sense of relief upon hearing that.

’It’s true, the two of them were never right for each other from the start...’

...

「Early the next morning.」

The small courtyard was already bustling with activity.

Chase Gallagher and the others waited here for Nina Jacobs and Leo Hale every morning.

They also used the time to check on Treasure.

"You’re taking such good care of him. Treasure’s coat has gotten so smooth."

Holden Shaw said, unable to stop stroking the dog.

When Treasure first arrived, he was in a wretched state, covered in wounds big and small.

But now, all his wounds had healed.

His energy levels and coat both looked incredibly healthy.

Nina Jacobs, worried he might get too hot, had even found a solar-powered fan somewhere.

It was blowing constantly into his cool, well-ventilated doghouse.

"She really is a kindhearted person."

Sheila Rhodes remarked from the side.

Although she didn’t go out to kill zombies, she would still come with the others to see Treasure every day.

When Nina Jacobs came out, she saw Sheila Rhodes smiling as she brushed Treasure’s fur.

Sheila had a naturally gentle appearance, and the scene exuded a sense of serene tranquility.

"I heard the base has made the arrangements. When the time comes, I’ll have Chase and Holden escort you back to City A," Nina Jacobs said to Sheila Rhodes.

Samson Thorne planned to set out in five days.

The two cities were some distance apart.

In her past life, Samson Thorne had planned to make a stop in City F along the way, so he had chosen to travel by vehicle.

Nina Jacobs remembered that he had met his end on the road after departing from Falken Base.

But in this life, because of Sheila Rhodes, the base had arranged a helicopter that could fly directly to City A.

Nina Jacobs breathed a sigh of relief after learning this.

Originally, she had even considered going with them to City A.

But Vera Coleman’s due date was fast approaching.

That was why she was having Chase Gallagher and Holden Shaw protect Sheila Rhodes together.

Chase Gallagher was from City A to begin with, and he was also a Dual Element Superpower User.

With him there, Nina Jacobs felt it wouldn’t be a problem.

The hand brushing Treasure’s fur paused.

"Yes, I understand."

Sheila Rhodes stood up.

"Um... I made some food for you to take on the road."

A man in an apron walked out.

He was holding several steaming-hot food containers.

Wendy Marshall’s face lit up with surprise. "Walsh?"

"I forgot to tell you, today is Walsh’s first day of work."

Nina Jacobs had Yvonne Willow put the food into her dimensional space.

Walsh was much more capable than she had imagined.

Vera Coleman had been singing his praises, raving about his cooking skills.

She had just seen him busy in the kitchen, not realizing he was preparing food for their trip.

"So you’re a chef? I never would have guessed."

Holden Shaw and the others all remembered Walsh.

He was unassuming, but he had taken a fatal blow for Eric Stone.

Thankfully, he was tough enough to survive.

"Yeah, I have a lot of free time. If you guys ever need it, you can call me over to cook for you, free of charge."

Walsh grinned, revealing a set of white teeth.

"That’s awesome! Don’t worry, man, we won’t let you work for free."

Holden Shaw clapped Walsh on the shoulder.

He wanted to taste the master chef’s cooking too.

The group departed soon after.

Nina Jacobs noticed the base was already quite lively, even though it was early in the morning.

There were many stalls along the roadside with signs hanging up.

They listed requirements and compensation.

"Those are all teams recruiting Superpower Users," Chase Gallagher said from the side.

"Do you folks have a team? Want to join us? As long as you’re a Superpower User, the benefits are great."

A strange man handed them a palm-sized flyer.

After Nina Jacobs politely declined, the man still stuffed the flyer into her hand.

"The address is on there! Contact me later if you’re interested!" the man shouted, undeterred, from behind them.

He could tell just by looking that Nina Jacobs and her group were not ordinary people.

"Can you join these teams just by signing up?" Nina Jacobs asked as she walked, looking over the flyer.

City D Base seemed much better off than it was in her past life.

At this same time in her past life, this road hadn’t been bustling like this at all.

This put her in a great mood, but it also made her curious.

"It’s not that simple. Many of the more powerful teams require a strict Superpower test, and some even have a trial-by-combat segment to test your Superpowers," Chase Gallagher replied.

There was a wide range of strength among Superpower Users.

A Superpower User with no combat experience would have a hard time finding a strong team.

"A Superpower test?" Nina Jacobs asked.

"Right. Although using Superpowers to cause trouble is forbidden inside the base, many teams will choose a place to conduct their Superpower tests where they won’t disturb others. The base tacitly allows it for now," Chase Gallagher explained.

The group had reached the parking garage.

City D Base had built a multi-story parking garage, located on both sides of the base entrance.

They could have also chosen to park their vehicle in their courtyard, but they had recently found a minibus outside. Because of its large size, they kept it in the parking garage.

"I see."

Nina Jacobs stood to the side, waiting for Holden Shaw to get the vehicle, her gaze lost in the flyer in her hand.

She completely failed to notice a convoy of vehicles passing by.

"Isn’t that Nina Jacobs? Still looking for a team?"

Renee Strong had also seen the flyer in Nina Jacobs’s hand and couldn’t resist walking over.
