Chapter 206: He Has a Job Too
Chapter 206: He Has a Job Too
Selling the hemostatic spray was a great boost to her Experience Points.
More and more people had learned about the hemostatic spray these past few days, and some even wanted to buy it in bulk.
She had refused them all.
Except for members of the rescue teams.
Nina Jacobs knew that each rescue team had about 150 to 200 members.
A supply of fifty bottles was more than enough for one team.
"So that’s what it was for. That’s very thoughtful of you."
Levi Stone couldn’t help but think more highly of Claire Warner.
Before he left, she even gave him two free bottles.
"My little shop has an unstable supply, so please keep today’s matter a secret," Nina Jacobs said.
"Of course. Thanks. But why don’t you open your shop inside the base? Wouldn’t it be safer there?"
Levi Stone couldn’t help but ask.
Zombies appeared on this road from time to time. How could this shop owner do business in a place like this?
"I don’t live in the base, and I’m not a member of the base."
Nina Jacobs’s words stunned Levi Stone even more.
’There’s a base right there and she won’t go in? People like that actually exist?’
"Then where do you live? It’s not safe out here."
"I don’t have a permanent residence."
Hearing Claire Warner say that, Levi Stone knew he had asked too many questions.
’How could someone who sells supplies dare to reveal where they live?’
That evening, when Nina Jacobs returned to the base, she noticed the base was already quite crowded.
People were coming and going everywhere.
The new base needed to recruit talented people, and the recruitment windows in front of the administration building were swamped.
Everyone wanted to find a stable job in the new base.
Some people even got into fistfights over their place in line.
A team of people in blue uniforms quickly appeared and restored order.
Nina Jacobs knew these uniforms belonged to the base’s security patrol.
The security patrol was mainly responsible for maintaining order within the base.
The female patrol member leading the team had a sharp, commanding presence and directed her subordinates methodically.
She saw Nina Jacobs and broke into a brilliant smile.
"Eric Stone?"
Nina Jacobs hadn’t expected Eric Stone from the Lockwood Squad to have joined the security patrol.
"It was Captain Pearson who recommended us. Kurt Garrison and I joined together, but he’s on a different team," Eric Stone said with a smile, greeting Nina Jacobs.
"That’s wonderful. How is Walsh recovering?" Nina Jacobs asked.
"He’s fully recovered. He’s looking for a job right now," Eric Stone replied with a smile.
Besides her and Kurt Garrison, several other Superpower Users from the Lockwood Squad were also accepted into the security patrol because of their combat experience.
"That’s good."
Nina Jacobs exchanged a few more words with Eric Stone and then left.
Speaking of which, it was time for her to get serious about finding some help for her home.
Putting aside other chores, she at least needed someone to cook.
Leo Hale had been in charge of the kitchen these past few days, and the dishes on the dinner table had gradually become terrifying...
Since Nina Jacobs was back early, she decided to take a look around the base.
Walking past the administration building and taking the road to its right, she came to the base’s cafeteria.
This place served three meals a day and was what the survivors cared about most.
You had to use Points to eat in the cafeteria.
Currently, a single dinner cost 5 Points, equivalent to 30 regular Crystal Cores.
Nina Jacobs remembered that the Point cost for cafeteria meals never changed, but the exchange rate for Crystal Cores kept rising.
In less than three months, 5 Points would cost 50 Crystal Cores to exchange...
"Who the hell are you? Get out of the way."
A harsh shout came from up ahead, followed by a figure being shoved out of the crowd.
The person was pushed to the ground but got back up indignantly. "I won the knife skills competition! Didn’t you say the winner would get an interview?"
The voice sounded a little familiar.
As Nina Jacobs got closer, she realized it was Walsh.
"This competition was about overall quality," a woman with glasses sitting under a sun umbrella answered, her expression unnatural.
"I was a full five minutes faster than him, and I won the blindfolded shredding contest. What other ’overall quality’ is there?"
Walsh was on the verge of tears.
Nina Jacobs listened to the chatter of the crowd and looked at the few makeshift tables set up in the center.
It turned out the base cafeteria was also hiring chefs.
Those who passed the cutting skills test would get an interview for a chef position.
A job at the cafeteria was a lucrative one, so people had been lining up to participate since morning.
Walsh had already distinguished himself from the crowd of participants, but he wasn’t among those who ultimately got an interview.
The neatly shredded newspaper strips and various other examples of decorative knife work on the tables were Walsh’s creations.
Compared to the others next to them, Walsh’s work was clearly the most professional.
"That silly kid. He doesn’t have any connections, of course he was going to get cut."
"I know, right? Those other guys paid their way in. They say the interviews are fair and impartial, but a regular person can’t even get a foot in the door."
"Let’s go, let’s go. This is pointless..."
The setup was quickly dismantled, and no one paid any more attention to the helpless Walsh.
Only a few people who had received interview notices walked past him smugly.
"You can cook?"
A voice sounded from beside him.
Walsh looked up, and when he saw Nina Jacobs, his surprised expression was mixed with a lingering sense of grievance.
"Yeah, I graduated from culinary school."
Walsh remembered Nina Jacobs.
But his memory of her was hazy. After all, he had been unconscious the whole time the Lockwood Squad was in danger.
He only knew that Nina Jacobs was very powerful and had saved all of them.
"What kind of food can you make?"
Nina Jacobs was truly surprised that Walsh knew how to cook.
"I know all Eight Great Cuisines of China, plus Western and Japanese food... I’ve even won awards in competitions before."
That was why he had been so confident during the competition earlier. He never expected this outcome.
"Do you know how to make postpartum recovery meals? And baby food."
Nina Jacobs’s question caught Walsh off guard for a moment.
’Postpartum... meals?’
"Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s for my family," Nina Jacobs explained.
"I worked as a chef for two years, but I’ve never made postpartum meals or baby food..." Walsh answered honestly.
"That’s fine. Come with me and give it a try first. If it works out, I can find some relevant recipes and books for you."
Nina Jacobs checked the time. It was almost dinnertime, the perfect opportunity for Walsh to do a trial run.
In the kitchen, Leo Hale watched in astonishment as Walsh chopped ingredients with lightning speed, his figure a blur as he switched between various pots and utensils.
’I’ve only ever seen this on TV and in variety shows before.’
At first, he hadn’t understood why Nina Jacobs brought a stranger home.
But now, smelling the aroma wafting from the kitchen, he instantly understood just how brilliant Nina Jacobs was.
’This guy looks like the real deal! A true master chef, no doubt!’
And when a table full of dishes that were perfect in color, aroma, and taste was served, even Wayne Warner, standing off to the side, found his mouth watering.
"What smells so good?"
Leo Hale had caught the scent all the way from the courtyard.
Meanwhile, Walsh was looking at Nina Jacobs with an anxious expression.
With no fresh vegetables or meat, he could only make this much using the few ingredients Nina Jacobs had provided.
Nina Jacobs tasted just one dish. "You’ve passed. Come to work tomorrow morning."
He had made eight different dishes from just three ingredients, and they were all incredibly delicious.
Nina Jacobs also felt that this Walsh was a genius.
"Really? I have a job now?"
Walsh could hardly believe it.
He knew how hard it was for an ordinary person without a Superpower to survive in the base.
He never thought this opportunity would come from Nina Jacobs.
