Chapter 259 259: Ancient Domains
As Violet and Luna walked into the vast cave they noticed a few things immediately, firstly was that their was a sort of omnipresent illumination that provided a gentle light, yet despite the girls best attempts they were unable to detect any cause for the illumination leaving them slightly stumped.
The second thing that they noticed was the impossible length of this cave tunnel. It did not take them long before they have traveled enough distance to have easily crossed the mountain peak twice over, yet they still remained inside the tunnel and their was no end in sight.
The walls held no details, for all intents and purposes this was a simple natural cave. It was only the unnatural circumstance that they found themselves in that allowed them to know differently.
After almost 5 minutes of walking at a steady pace with still no end in sight the girls eventually came to a stop. "Something isn't right here, we should have reached something by now." Luna groused as she turned to look behind them.
When she did however she froze in shock, their was no light showcasing the enterance that they walked in from, in fact the 'enterance' now looked identical to what lay before them. "Umm I think we have walked into a trap of some kind."
Violet then turned around to see what she meant and frowned as she too realised the same fact. "Well that's anoying, any ideas on what we should do?"
"Hmm, maybe try leave some marks on the walls as we walk? Probably some special magic's going on to keep us trapped here. It smells similar to those incarnations and apostles."
With no better idea violet happily extended a claw and left a visable scratch in the nearby wall before the two once more resumed walking forward.
In just about a minute of walking the two found themselves staring at an all too familiar scratch on the wall. "Hu, well that's not ideal." Luna muttered in annoyance.
Violet tried to understand what was happening here and she soon managed to come up with a initial idea. "I think we might be stuck walking between two permanent portals of some kind, each one sending us back and forth to keep us trapped in this section of the tunnel."
"Okay, yeah that would make sense, but how do we escape from that?" Asked Luna.
To that Violet smirked. "Have you forgotten that void is the counter to spatial magic?" Luna's Arctic eyes opened wide for a moment before a fang filled smile adorned her face.
"Then get shooting!" She exuberantly stated.
With a laugh Violet decided to start easy and just sent forward a single void bolt to get some kind of understanding of the situation.
The bolt of nothingness shot forward with impressive speed, it traveled around 60 meters before reality seemed to ripple slightly. Violet then turned her head and spotted the bolt now flying towards them from behind them, it seems to have appeared around 40 meters from them.
With that Violet assumed that this section of tunnel was only around 100 meters long, she did quickly explode the bolt before it could get any closer to them.
She quickly explained her thoughts to Luna who nodded in agreement. "Okay so I definitely saw the ripple in space, so I'm guessing that we just need to apply enough force in order to break the portal?"
"That's what I think yeah." Violet agreed.
So she then sent out a full barrage of void bolts, again reality rippled before sending the bolts back to the start of the loop. A quick flex of her mana and those bolts dispersed.
Next she fired off a spear, this time space seemed to bend slightly at the portal before the spear was once again sent back to the other portal. Violet frowned in annoyance at that before summoning another spear, this one however she poured considerably more mana into it.
Soon the spear doubled, then trippled in size, it was around 8 meters long and as wide as her humanoid fist. The spear shot forward, leaving faint ripples in reality as it travelled.
When it collided with the invisable barrier the portal space buckled, then slowly, cracks appeared in reality before a sound of shattering glass echoed out as the portal scattered and the spear shot forwards unimpeded to collide with the side of the tunnel.
"Nice job! Now shall we see what lays beyond?"
Violet preened slightly at the word of praise before reigning it in and trying to appear haughty. "Hmph as if some portal could stand up to me."
Luna glanced at her companion with amusement but didn't dain to point out how they had just fallen foul to a portal less than a day ago. She opted to just push on instead. "Let's go then."
So the two walked forwards one again, soon passing by the point that the previous portal had blocked their path. To be sure they checked behind them and noted with relief that they could once more spot the exit to the tunnel with sunlight streaming through the cave enterance in the distance.
The two soon emerged into a large open cavern, its walls were likely once a thing of beauty, detailed carvings of nature adorned the walls now besmirched with dozens of brutal looking scratches and cracks, as if a vicious battle had taken place within these walls at one point. The two did not have to look for long before they understood what exactly had taken place here so long ago.
Lying scattered around the cavern lay dozens of humanoid skeletons, their bodies torn apart and scattered. What shreds of armour remained better resembled scrap metal instead of its once no doubt gleaming armour.
Yet the most striking feature of the cave was the singular giant skeleton that lay at the back of the cave. It giant bones showing innumerable wounds that undoubtedly fell the giant, its large body was connected to a long tail, neck and two large wings.
This was the final resting place for a ancient dragon and the spot upon which it was killed.
"Oh, by the gods." Luna muttered as the two companions took in the scenes of utter carnage that marred this once beautiful cave.
Upon closer inspection the tell tale signs of powerful magics littered the space, scorch marks and melted sections of stone from powerful fire attacks. Shattered stone spears still imbedded within some of the dragons bones. One of the humanoids was even still encapsulated within a block of ice, still radiating a brutal chill even after the unknown years since the attack was launched.
It was a sober reminder of exactly what kind of fate befell the dragon race as a whole so many years ago at the hand of the Kingdom of Eldor.
Violet did not speak for some time, simply standing still as she observed the ancient dragon and those that fell in their attempt to slay this mighty beast.
Eventually she let out a ong and slow breath, her draconic aura surging with her words. "Rest well ancient one, know that you shall not be forgotten and that your memory shall be avenged."
At the end her presence entirely suffused the entire cave, dousing the area in an oppressive atmosphere of melancholy and loss.
As this was happening however, something within the cave seemed to resonate with her presence, it felt similar to the first blip that had attracted their attention from outside and both girls turned in its direction.
A faint flickering light emanated from below the dragons body, under the rubble that acted as its eternal resting place.
Violet slowly moved closer, her curiosity drawing her in.
When she was besides the long dead dragon the flickering light intensified and the sound of shifting rubble clattered out. Violet took a hesitant step backwards just as a ball of light flew up and hovered before her.
It was a deep glacial blue in colour, it radiated a deadly chill that surpassed what Luna could emit yet, it also did not nagativly effect Violet at all as she stared at the having anomaly.
Then the ball shot forward directly towards Violet's head. She tried to rear back in surprise yet the ball was simply too fast, instead of colliding with her the ball passed straight through her scales and fully entered her body.
Luna shouted out in alarm as she watched this happen, Violet instantly stiffened in surprise, seemingly unresponsive to Luna's worries. She tried to nudge Violet out of whatever stupor she was in yet had no response causing her worry to intensify.
Just as she was beginning to consider a more drastic approach in snapping Violet out of it, her companion suddenly shook herself and took a step back as she wildly looked about in shock.
"Violet, are you alright? What just happened?" Luna hesitantly asked.
Violet took a moment to reply as she seemed to be processing something, then instead of replying to the question directly she instead opted to share an avalanche of information through their bond drawing Luna into the memories that had just been imparted to Violet.
