Chapter 84
*
Having spent the night in the library, I headed to the counter first thing in the morning.
By the way, spending the night in the library is a common thing among adventurers.
Especially for novice adventurers who've just finished a job, it's not unusual to fall asleep there.
Today, about three adventurers were passed out asleep.
Of course, there are no beds, so I wouldn't recommend it.
Naturally, there's no benefit in an adventurer, whose body is their greatest asset, mistreating themselves like this.
I stretch my stiff, aching back and feel the consequences.
"So, I'd like a request that feels good, if you know what I mean."
"You're not planning to take off that mask, are you?"
Lana doesn't even try to hide her exasperation anymore.
I wonder if that's appropriate for guild staff, but I'm still grateful to Lana for flipping through the documents summarizing requests and looking into it for me.
Perhaps she's picked up on my intent, as she doesn't question who I am.
"What exactly do you mean by 'feels good'?"
"Money."
Lana tilts her head.
"You mean the reward? Pardon me, Lord Longdagger, but if you need money, we're prepared to pay out the defeat reward for the last designated target. Also, there's the success reward for the designated request from the Church."
I shake my head, and don't call me Longdagger.
So she didn't pick up on my intent; she just assumed it's me. Well, it is me, though.
Those rewards were earned together with Erika.
If it's not money I earned on my own, it's meaningless.
"I don't know whose reward that is, but I can't accept it."
"Huh?"
Occasionally, Lana's clueless side shows, and her gaze that says, 'What is this guy even talking about?' stings my heart a bit.
But no, right now, I'm not Shin Longdagger.
"Uh, well, um? I'll assume there's some kind of situation, or if you're wearing a mask for no reason at all, then, ah, I'd think you've gone off the deep end."
This girl doesn't hold back, does she?
"Thanks to a certain someone, a huge amount of magic stones and materials were brought in, and inevitably, various requests have been completed. I'm not sure what level of reward you're hoping for, but there's nothing higher than the reward I just mentioned for that certain someone, which we're holding onto."
It's an answer I half-expected.
But what does it mean that there's nothing above a Forest Dragon, even among designated targets?
Even if it's not a place like Faltarl where strong monsters frequently appear, this is still close to the Demonlands.
There's got to be something out there.
"What about a Chimera?"
I mention a monster famous in Faltarl as a designated target that often gets ignored.
By the way, the main reason it's ignored is that my mentor, who hunts designated targets as a pastime, doesn't like them.
By the way, I don't like them either.
They're just a pain, tenacious in a different way from dragon species that can't be killed due to their extraordinary regenerative abilities fueled by overflowing magical energy.
I don't feel confident taking one down solo; I'd need Erika if I were to target one.
Erika...
"Guh!"
"Whoa! Can you stop suddenly spitting blood after mentioning an ominous monster's name!?"
In a panic, I clenched my teeth too hard and ended up crushing a molar.
I heal it with healing magic and then clean the blood with purification magic.
"By the way, there aren't any Chimeras."
Lana says, leaning back slightly.
"I see."
Well, I didn't expect to conveniently find a request at the guild, so it doesn't hurt too much. That's why I dug through materials in the library; I still have a plan.
As I thank her and walk toward the exit, leaving the bustling Adventurer's Guild in the early morning, Lana calls out from behind.
"Please come pick up the reward we're holding onto soon! Your wife can come instead if you'd like!"
"Guhhh!"
Having bitten my tongue, I spray blood everywhere like a fountain.
