Chapter 821: Redemption
Chapter 821: Redemption
Zhang Lingying spent the whole day outside, and she was really quite tired. She fell asleep shortly after lying down on the bed.
When she woke up in the middle of the night, she thought it was already morning. She reached out to the bedside table to pick up her phone and glanced at the time. It was three in the morning, still a few hours before dawn.
She lay in bed, and now that she had awoken, the drowsiness had vanished. Instead, her once muddled mind had become unusually clear after the rest.
From the pleasant time spent with Leng Jian during the day to returning home at night to host Lu Jing... What lingered in her mind the most were the words from Lu Jing’s assistant.
She recalled the scene when Lu Jing last spent the night at her place, and for some inexplicable reason, she got up.
When she arrived in the living room and saw Lu Jing curled up in the corner of the sofa, her brows unconsciously furrowed.
Before she went to bed, he clearly went to the guest room to sleep, yet after she woke up, he was sitting in the living room.
Zhang Lingying vaguely understood something. Her eyes flickered, and just as she was about to turn around back to her room, Lu Jing already heard her footsteps. "Did I wake you?"
"No, I just got up to drink some water." Zhang Lingying paused for just a second before responding calmly.
She walked to the living room to pour herself a glass of water.
While she drank water, Lu Jing’s gaze remained on her, as if wanting to say something, but in the end, he said nothing.
Zhang Lingying did not ask either, and after drinking the water, she returned to her room.
She seemed not curious at all about why he was sitting in the living room in a daze in the middle of the night instead of sleeping.
After closing the door, she walked to the window in her bedroom, lifted her head, and glanced outside.
There were still no stars tonight.
The assistant’s words and the tension in Lu Jing’s eyes when he saw her also made her feel a heaviness in her chest.
Zhang Lingying pursed her lips, reached out to hug her quilt, and returned to the living room.
Under Lu Jing’s surprised gaze, she placed the pillow on the sofa, then lay down with the quilt. "I just had a nightmare and don’t want to be alone. You watch your stars, I’ll just lie here; I won’t disturb you."
After Zhang Lingying spoke, she lay down next to the edge of the sofa where Lu Jing was leaning, tucked herself in properly, and closed her eyes to sleep.
The girl’s gentle breathing in the tranquil night had a comforting magic to it.
From the moment he saw her come out with her quilt, Lu Jing’s body was tense, his nerves wound tight, as if already anticipating that she would definitely ask him something and look at him with a sympathetic gaze.
But until the end, she didn’t ask anything at all, just said hello and fell asleep beside him.
The moment Lu Jing’s nerves relaxed, his heart softened as well.
The light in the living room was already off. He gently turned his body and, illuminated by the moonlight coming in from outside the window, gazed at the girl sleeping on the sofa, his eyes filled with infinite tenderness.
"Little girl, has no one ever told you what terrible consequences there might be for showing sympathy to a demon?" He reached out, wanting to brush away the hair on her face, but worried about waking her, so he withdrew his hand.
He stared at her slightly parted cherry lips for a long time, but in the end, he only helped her cover the quilt that had slipped off.
Insomnia had plagued him for many days, yet listening to the rhythmic breathing of another beside him brought a long-missed peace to his heart. Leaning against the edge of the sofa, he silently closed his eyes and fell asleep.
When Zhang Lingying woke up, Lu Jing had left once again.
But this time, breakfast was left on the dining table—a ham and fried egg, along with a bowl of congee.
