Chapter 47
"Why come so often?" Xu Feifei answered as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "We live in the same town, after all. It's not far at all. I'll just have Dad's driver bring me over whenever he's free."
Dad's driver... Xia Ying's mind flashed to certain scenes she'd seen on TV. She marveled at how impressive the Xu family was—they had everything. With wide, dazed eyes, she stared at the item in Feifei's hand.
Feifei quickly explained, "Oh, this is a gift I brought for Liu Wenjie. Um..." She knew perfectly well that this was Liu Wenjie's real little sister and that she needed to get on her good side. Testing the waters, she added, "I've been short on allowance lately, but if you like it too, I'll buy you one next time, okay?!"
Xia Ying shook her head, completely immune to the temptation. "I don't want it..."
To her, the most important people in the world used to be Mom and Dad. But after that incident last time, little Xia Ying had come to understand that the ones who truly mattered most were Older Brother Wenjie and Grandpa—especially Older Brother Wenjie. She would never let anyone take him away from her.
She wasn't the same Xia Ying who used to be too scared to speak up anymore. She had to fight for her own happiness. She couldn't keep running away.
Little Xia Ying turned her head with some hesitation, biting her lip as she asked someone, "Older Brother Wenjie, do you want it?"
Liu Wenjie was on the bed eating fruit. "Of course I don't want it either. At our age, this hardly counts as a kid's gift." His eyes showed clear disdain. "Besides, I don't like people checking my contact list every now and then."
Feifei wanted to bite someone! But with Xia Ying here, she could only force a laugh and glare at Liu Wenjie.
Who knew that the moment Feifei shot him that glare, little Xia Ying would suddenly scuttle sideways like a crab, positioning herself between the two of them and blocking Feifei's line of sight.
Xia Ying said nervously, "Actually... you don't have to come often. I'll play with Older Brother Wenjie."
Feifei blinked in surprise, laughing awkwardly. Who would have thought this annoying guy would be so popular with his sister?
Although Feifei was an only child, she knew that younger sisters clinging to their older brothers was common. And it was also common for them to prevent other girls from getting close to their brothers.
But as long as she was sincere, she would eventually win her over. They would become friends!
Feifei took the initiative. "I know you'll play with him, but the three of us can play together. I won't leave you out."
Just as she finished speaking, Lin Xiaoli quietly walked over and glanced at the three people in the room.
All three turned to look at the newcomer.
Lin Xiaoli chuckled. "Just checking what you're up to. How's it going? No arguments, right?"
Liu Wenjie was puzzled. "Arguments? Why would we argue?"
Lin Xiaoli waved her hand with narrowed eyes. "Nothing, nothing. Pretend I didn't ask. You kids keep playing. Auntie's going back to chat with the others."
With that, Lin Xiaoli came like the wind and left like the wind. Liu Wenjie couldn't figure out what his mom was up to.
But Lin Xiaoli knew that when these two girls got together, they might not play so well. She understood that look Feifei had given—it was almost identical to how little Xia Ying looked at her son.
Still, they were just kids. She was probably overthinking things. For now, everything seemed fine.
After Lin Xiaoli left, Feifei locked eyes with Xia Ying again. The former smiled; the latter forced a reluctant smile, lips pressed together.
A mischievous idea popped into Feifei's head. "Oh! How about the three of us play cards? It's the best way to bond. Landlord! Xia Ying, do you know how to play?"
"Landlord? Just a little."
Feifei was delighted. "That's great!" She turned to Liu Wenjie. "You have playing cards at home, right?"
Liu Wenjie figured playing cards was fine. With these two live-in deities here today, he definitely couldn't get anything else done.
"Xia Ying, go get them. You know where they are, right?"
Little Xia Ying nodded obediently. "Wait for me."
Feifei watched as Xia Ying left the room, then exhaled sharply at Liu Wenjie.
Liu Wenjie was bewildered. "What are you doing?"
Feifei pouted, snorted coldly, and turned her head away, temporarily putting away her phone. "I hate you so much!"
Soon the three closed the door and sat on the bed in a three-way standoff.
But clearly, Xia Ying's territory was sitting a bit too close to Wenjie's territory. Originally all three were the same distance apart, but Xia Ying's bottom kept stealthily inching toward Liu Wenjie.
Feifei saw this but paid it little mind. After all, they were real siblings—she could understand.
She proposed, "How about we set up a reward? The winner can ask the losers a question, and they have to answer truthfully. What do you think?"
Liu Wenjie agreed.
Little Xia Ying also nodded.
The three officially began. But after drawing his cards, Liu Wenjie felt his hand was garbage. "I don't want to be landlord."
Feifei raised her hand. "I do."
Hearing that Older Brother Wenjie didn't want it, Xia Ying naturally wouldn't either. "I don't want it either."
Feifei took the cards. "Then these cards are mine, hehe. Pair of threes!"
Liu Wenjie followed. "Pair of fours."
Xia Ying blinked, then openly showed her cards to Liu Wenjie. "How should I play, Older Brother Wenjie?"
Liu Wenjie looked at her speechlessly. "Don't show me your cards, you dummy Xia Ying. Just play the highest ones to beat me."
"Oh, then bomb!"
Liu Wenjie: "..."
Feifei: "Then I don't want it."
Liu Wenjie: "Xia Ying, keep playing. Start with the smaller numbers."
Xia Ying obediently threw down two small cards. "Pair of twos!"
Liu Wenjie was stunned. What the hell was this game!
After one round, Feifei won without any surprises. She showed off to Liu Wenjie. "Aren't I amazing?! Today's my lucky day!"
Little Xia Ying apologized beside them. "Sorry, Older Brother Wenjie." Liu Wenjie gave a cold laugh. "I'm used to it."
If I have sinned, please send me to prison rather than sending these two to torment me.
Feifei cleared her throat. "I won, so I'll ask each of you a question. Liu Wenjie first!" She blushed. "Did you make any new friends over summer vacation? Especially, did you play with any girls? Answer truthfully!"
Liu Wenjie was helpless. "No, just played with Xia Ying."
Feifei made a happy sound. That was more like it.
She turned to Xia Ying. She knew she had to ask Xia Ying something simpler to deepen their relationship.
"Xia Ying, why does everyone call you Xia Ying instead of Liu Xia Ying? Or why did Auntie just call Liu Wenjie Xiaojie, but not call you Xiaoying?"
Xia Ying thought the question was strange. "Because my name is Xia Ying."
Feifei felt she hadn't understood. "But your name is Liu Xia Ying, right? Xia Ying is your nickname?"
"No, my name is Xia Ying. Not Liu Xia Ying. My surname is Xia."
Feifei was confused, blinking blankly. "What do you mean? I don't quite understand. You don't take your father's surname? Is Liu Wenjie not your brother?"
Xia Ying was pressed right next to Liu Wenjie, lips pursed as she stared at Feifei. "I think you've misunderstood something. Though I can't explain it clearly, the brother you're talking about is probably not the same as the brother I call. Older Brother Wenjie is not my brother. We are..."
She grabbed Liu Wenjie's arm and enunciated each word: "Childhood sweethearts. He's the most important person to me."
Those four words struck like lightning. Feifei's pupils contracted, and the cards in her hand fell like autumn leaves.
"What did you say... You're not his sister?"
