Chapter 34

The instant Liu Wenjie crossed the finish line in overwhelming fashion, every rival on the field was plunged into despair.

All the students of Class One burst into excited cheers; Liu Wenjie had once again made Class One of second grade the brightest class of the year.

"As expected of our class president!"

"Long live the class president!"

"With the class president around, nobody can beat our second-grade Class One!"

Xu Feifei, equally delighted, let out a proud, tsundere click of her tongue. "Tch! That guy runs way too fast—I actually lost to him again! So annoying."

Even while complaining, she waved her arms excitedly to celebrate him, joining the crowd: "As expected of our class president!"

In the Class Four bleachers, little Xia Ying also broke into a happy smile as Liu Wenjie finished first.

Older Brother Wenjie really is amazing!

But when she saw her own classmates sighing in sympathy for Class Four's contestant, she quickly covered her mouth and wiped the smile away; she couldn't let anyone catch her secretly cheering for Liu Wenjie.

There was a short break below the field. Xu Feifei ran to the supply area to fetch Liu Wenjie some water.

Yet just as she pulled two bottles from the crowd and was about to head over, she looked up and caught sight of Jiang Rao.

Ever since that day, Jiang Rao had spoken far less in class, seemingly too embarrassed to strut around as before. What hadn't changed, however, was that she still seemed to admire Liu Wenjie.

Whenever Liu Wenjie crossed the finish line, even Jiang Rao—who usually only slacked off—would light up with joy.

Xu Feifei froze for a moment, only now noticing that it wasn't just Jiang Rao; many of the surrounding girls seemed to share the same feelings when talking about Liu Wenjie.

"That Class One class president is so handsome!"

"Yeah, and he's first in our whole grade—he's basically the prince from a fairy tale!"

"If only my future husband looked like that; he's even cooler than my dad!"

"He's like a celebrity!"

Children often speak without overthinking, but their words carry the purest longing for beautiful things.

Hearing all this, Xu Feifei looked again at Liu Wenjie, who had just been declared first by the referee.

Confidence far beyond his years shone on his face.

The short hair couldn't hide the good looks he'd possessed since childhood; when the breeze swept across the field, his profile looked resolute, his whole figure sparkling in the sunlight.

Give him a white horse and he really could gallop straight into a fairy-tale world to play the prince of his childhood.

Xu Feifei stared until her cheeks unconsciously reddened. "These girls are overreacting—sure, he's impressive, but he's hardly some prince on a white horse, and it's not like he's that handsome, right?"

She shyly smoothed a twin ponytail and her bangs with one hand.

Muttering, "Still... he does shine, I guess," she jogged over happily. "Liu Wenjie! Congrats on first place!"

She handed him the water. "Here, have a drink!"

Spotting her running over, Liu Wenjie took the bottle. "Thanks."

Xu Feifei lifted her chin. "I may have lost to you again, but there are plenty of other events left—I'll make up the points! Don't let your guard down!"

Someone nearby teased, "You're always so fired up. Deep down you know you can't win, yet you keep talking tough, huh?"

Xu Feifei looked embarrassed but refused to back down. "Who says I can't win? Teacher says failure is the mother of success—little setbacks mean nothing; losing now doesn't mean I'll lose later."

She watched Liu Wenjie gulp down half the bottle; the clear mineral water sparkled like crystal in the sunlight.

It seemed that anything near that guy changed—even the most ordinary things became dazzling.

When he finished, Liu Wenjie reminded her, "By the way, next time I'm running, could you not cheer so loudly? It's really noisy."

Xu Feifei paid no attention, only giving a light hum and turning away. "Mind your own business."

After she left, her cheeks burned and she pressed her lips together.

Just drink your water—why glow like Ultraman?

Liu Wenjie wondered why she'd suddenly left in the wrong direction. "Hey, where are you going? The girls' team is up again soon!"

From a distance Xu Feifei shouted back, "Going to the restroom to splash water on my face—it's boiling today! My cheeks are on fire!"

Liu Wenjie glanced up at the sky; it was actually quite cool and breezy—this little girl had too many quirks.

Their bickering was completely out in the open, so little Xia Ying in the stands saw every detail clearly.

Her big, dazed eyes blinked.

This time she was almost certain Xu Feifei really had become good friends with Older Brother Wenjie—otherwise he wouldn't have talked to her so much these past few days.

"Hey, isn't that Xu Feifei? The one talking to Liu Wenjie—she was in our kindergarten!" a boy in Class Four suddenly said.

Another chimed in, "You didn't recognize her when she took first for the girls just now? She hardly changed since kindergarten—the twin ponytails are a dead giveaway."

"Mainly she always wore dresses back then; this is the first time I've seen her in sportswear. What's her relationship with Liu Wenjie? I only remember them always fighting in kindergarten, but they seemed super close."

"I remember Xu Feifei used to seek Liu Wenjie out all the time. They're childhood sweethearts—only childhood sweethearts could be that tight."

It had started as idle chatter, but when those four words came out of someone's mouth—

Little Xia Ying felt her heart skip a beat, her eyes trembling.

Her small hands clutched the hem of her skirt, eyes fixed on Liu Wenjie and Xu Feifei down below.

"Childhood sweethearts... Xu Feifei and Older Brother Wenjie are childhood sweethearts?"

She remembered Lin Xiaoli saying that word countless times.

Unconsciously she whispered the rest: "I thought I was Older Brother Wenjie's childhood sweetheart..."

The rest of the meet proceeded with no surprises.

Liu Wenjie dominated every event; the older students stared in shock, wondering what kind of monster he was—no one could compete!

The sports specialist in the school-leaders' section grew more excited by the minute. He wanted to rush down and personally award Liu Wenjie, then talk to him about dedicating his life to sports—his talent could surely win Olympic glory for the nation!

But of course Principal Zhang wouldn't allow it; today was purely for showing off—showing his old friend in sports the genius he'd recruited, no stealing allowed.

When the sports meet ended, Liu Wenjie was instantly swarmed by boys and girls the moment he stepped off the field.

The boys wanted to befriend him as brothers; the girls wanted to be his good friends.

Liu Wenjie had been waiting for this moment—time for a big boost.

"Liu Wenjie, you're amazing! Which kindergarten did you go to before?"

"Forgot."

[Congratulations, Host, you have received one chocolate coin.]

"Little brother Liu Wenjie, I'm in fourth grade—can I come play with you in your class later?"

"No thanks, I still prefer hanging out with second-graders."

[Congratulations, Host, you have received +1 Charm.]

"Liu Wenjie, I'm in Class Three of second grade—we're the same year, let's be friends."

"But I'm in Class Two, so forget it."

[Congratulations, Host, you have received +1 Intelligence.]

"Class president, class president! I'm in Class Two!"

"Oh, then why are you adding to the chaos? Get back to the classroom."

[Congratulations, Host, you have received one milk candy.]

Xu Feifei, listening to every rejection, blinked. "He's even more stubborn than me about not making friends."
