Chapter 27
Xu Feifei puffed her cheeks and pleaded, "Just treat it as me owing you a big favor—I'll pay it back someday. I, Xu Feifei, never take advantage of anyone, okay?"
[Xu Feifei wants you to help find the real culprit. Your choices are:]
[Agree decisively: Sure, it's a deal! Reward: Xu Feifei's huge favor]
[Cruelly refuse: No way, solve it yourself! Reward: Your legs will never cramp for a lifetime]
[Take advantage of the fire: One favor isn't enough—owe me at least two! Reward: +1 Temperament]
Oh? These options are a little special this time, especially the third one—it's not only greedy but doesn't even say agree or refuse.
Really sneaky.
I like it!
"One isn't enough; at least owe me two favors."
[Congratulations, Host, you've gained +1 Temperament]
Xu Feifei brightened instantly. "Really! Two it is—a promise is a promise!" But after speaking she gave a snort, turned her head, and muttered, "Never thought I'd have to beg this guy for help one day—how embarrassing."
"What did you say?" Liu Wenjie asked disdainfully.
Xu Feifei hurriedly shook her head with a smile. "Nothing, nothing—I'm praising you! Classmate Liu Wenjie is amazing! Class president is so handsome!"
Seeing her ever-changing attitude, Liu Wenjie recalled how she had stood up for him in Class Two a few days earlier. He sighed and said, "Actually, I can help you, but from now on, don't ever say in front of me—" he imitated Xu Feifei's tone, "'Liu Wenjie, if you don't become my good friend you'll definitely regret it~'—okay? I'm really sick of that line."
Xu Feifei felt mortified hearing her own words thrown back at her. Blushing, she said awkwardly, "Fine, fine, I won't say it anymore—okay? Please stop mimicking me."
You won't even let me throw out my own threats? Damn Liu Wenjie! And what's so childish about it?
Liu Wenjie smiled. "That's more like it. Then it's settled—I'll help."
Xu Feifei flashed a V-sign, grinning: "Then let's wish the two of us an early vindication of the world's prettiest Xu Feifei!"
Noon break, cafeteria.
Today Class Four's dismissal ran a little late; when little Xia Ying reached the dining hall everyone else was already eating.
She looked toward Class One's table, and, almost as if possessed, came up with an idea: she wanted to see what Older Brother Wenjie was eating.
Of course not openly—just a peek as she walked past.
With that thought, Xia Ying tiptoed like a thief, lips pressed together, pretending to walk past Class One casually.
Her big eyes searched for a certain figure, but even after she'd passed the entire table he was nowhere to be seen.
Stopping in her tracks, she blinked her innocent eyes and muttered to herself, "Where's Older Brother Wenjie? Why isn't he here? Could he be in the restroom?"
On the school field.
Xu Feifei and Liu Wenjie sat under the shade of a corner tree.
A plastic bag lay between them.
It contained bread bought earlier at the school supermarket.
Xu Feifei took out one blueberry-flavored packet and one cream-flavored packet. "Which one do you want?"
Liu Wenjie reached out. "Either is fine."
After thinking it over Xu Feifei put the cream-flavored one in his hand. "Have the cream one—I think it tastes better."
With the bread chosen, Xu Feifei pulled out a packet of spicy gluten strips. "Here!"
Though they were children, the adult Liu Wenjie no longer cared for spicy gluten strips—too oily and sweet.
"I'll just have bread; you eat the gluten strips. I don't like them."
Xu Feifei looked at him as if he were an alien. "How can you be so different from everyone else? Are you even human? Not liking spicy gluten strips?"
She flicked her twin ponytails back and bit into the strips and bread neatly.
One bite of gluten strips, one bite of bread—she swayed happily. "At home my mom and dad never let me eat these, saying they're unhealthy, but who cares! Being happy matters most!"
Liu Wenjie didn't respond, cutting straight to the point:
"The vice class president is timid; it'll be easy to get something out of her. This afternoon I'll find a chance to call her out alone. You act pitiful in front of her—show how hurt you feel after being wronged. Once she knows you're innocent she'll feel guilty and scared. Then I'll go up and tell her I'm helping the teacher investigate and already have leads. Once she panics she'll definitely tell me something; leave the rest to me."
Xu Feifei sighed in admiration after hearing the plan: "Such a sly scheme—just like you!"
Liu Wenjie raised his hand and flicked her forehead again.
Xu Feifei yelped, "Why are you so violent? I compliment you and you still hit me!"
"I feel like it."
"Hmph! Hateful guy."
"Be serious. This afternoon, how guilty the vice president feels depends on your acting."
Xu Feifei patted her chest confidently, eyes closed. "When I, Xu Feifei, take action, relax!"
Seeing Liu Wenjie finish one bread and handing him another, she turned serious:
"By the way, Liu Wenjie, if Jiajia asks you how I'm doing these next couple of days, just say I'm fine. I don't want my friend worrying about me. She already asked me about it this morning."
"Got it."
"Thanks."
Liu Wenjie took the bread from her hand, watching Xu Feifei happily munching on spicy gluten strips again, cheeks puffed out. Though her family was rich, in some ways this girl was really down-to-earth.
That afternoon Liu Wenjie borrowed an activity as an excuse to call the vice class president alone to a corner.
He found a pretext to leave temporarily: "Wait here for me—I'll head to the classroom to grab something and be right back."
The vice class president nodded. Despite her title she had no real ideas and held little sway in class.
After Liu Wenjie left, it was Xu Feifei's turn—she had been hiding in the corner all along.
Xu Feifei thought, isn't it just acting pitiful?
How hard could it be?
She took off one of her twin ponytail ties and tossed it away, mussing her hair. She had already run to the restroom earlier to wet her hair, then smeared mud on her face.
Though the outfit was a bit of a shame to ruin, it was nothing compared to clearing her name.
So she found a patch of easily smudging wall and rubbed her body against it.
She pulled the ink refill from a ballpoint pen and splattered it on her clothes.
In no time, standing before the restroom mirror and looking at her wretched self, Xu Feifei proudly placed her hands on her hips and grinned: "As expected of me! I look miserable!"
After this, she limped past the vice class president as if by accident.
The vice class president stood there, stunned at the sight of Xu Feifei in this state. Had she been hit by a car?
Ink on her clothes, mud on her face—what on earth?
With a deathly expression Xu Feifei trembled past her like a zombie, stopping weakly in front of her and whispering, "Vice class president, why are you here..."
The vice class president was frightened: "I..."
Before she could finish Xu Feifei said:
"Forget it, no need to explain. What's happened isn't your fault, none of it. Even though my leg is lame and I probably can't attend school anymore, I know that day wasn't your fault. You were just frantic about the missing class fund and searched my drawer. Don't blame yourself—it's all my fault, all mine~ I'm going out onto the streets to pick up garbage to eat."
She limped away right in front of the vice class president.
Hidden in the corner, Liu Wenjie's jaw dropped. How on earth did this girl's brain work? That was way over the top!
You're supposed to look a bit downcast and shed a few tears—now it looked like some over-the-top drama. Who would believe that?
Yet to Liu Wenjie's surprise, the moment Xu Feifei left in that state, the vice class president suddenly burst into tears, overwhelmed with guilt and weeping bitterly—she had bought it completely.
Liu Wenjie: "....."
Fine, what else could he say? Maybe this was just the innocence of childhood.
Time for me to enter.
