Chapter 22
Chapter 22
Chapter 22
Liu Wenjie slung his backpack over his shoulder and walked into the classroom, picking an empty seat at random.
Although all the children who had graduated from kindergarten had come to this elementary school, there really weren't many familiar faces in the class.
Most of the children were meeting for the first time, yet they were becoming fast friends almost instantly—after all, if I talk to you and you talk to me, we're best friends.
A few girls noticed Liu Wenjie sitting quietly and thought the boy inexplicably good-looking.
Double effect of Charm and Appearance stats at work.
"Hi, what's your name?"
Liu Wenjie glanced at the speaker; his eyes carried an indescribable, aloof air.
He answered offhandedly, and the girl pursed her lips, rejected into silence.
[Congratulations, Host has gained +1 Charm]
Someone wanted to laugh.
Hmph—new semester, new persona, and so many new classmates; another chance to fleece the system!
Just as he was thinking this, at the classroom door a girl in a little yellow dress and twin ponytails swaggered in, radiating brilliance and grandeur.
Many students in the class were instantly drawn to her.
After all, someone always dressed flashy; twin ponytails plus a proud little face were a perfect match, and her left foot stepping over her right foot was the cherry on top.
The girl scanned the noisy classroom for a certain someone, quickly spotting him in a less crowded corner.
She cleared her throat, lifted her chin, and walked over to sit one seat away from him—close, but not too obviously so.
With a smile she set down her backpack. "What a coincidence, Liu Wenjie; I never expected we'd be in the same class."
Liu Wenjie looked at the familiar little demoness, very surprised. "Xu Feifei? What are you doing here?"
Xu Feifei's hands, busy with her backpack, froze; a vein throbbed on her forehead. She turned with a smile. "Of course I'm here to attend school."
Seeing Liu Wenjie's puzzled expression, she bit her silver teeth and humphed, calming herself. Over the summer she had grown—she would not be defeated by him again.
She explained sweetly, setting her bag in place. "You don't have to pretend, Liu Wenjie. On the class list my name is right under yours; there's no way you missed it. Playing dumb won't work."
Liu Wenjie was perfectly honest and ignored her. "Really? I didn't notice. Having you in the same class is a bit troublesome, though."
Xu Feifei wanted to activate her Spinosaurus form and bite the guy next to her!
What does that mean! How could I be troublesome!
She took a deep breath. Fine—endure, endure; soon this guy would learn how terrifying she could be.
Rubber-band jumping, jump rope, relay races, beanbag toss, TV trivia—after a whole summer of special training she had mastered them all!
Even the nanny aunt was shocked by her prowess. Once outdoor classes started and he saw her skills, he would naturally admire her and beg to be her friend.
A classmate came up to greet Xu Feifei. "You're so pretty—what's your name?"
Hearing the girls around her, Xu Feifei cleared her throat and replied proudly, yet happily, "I'm Xu Feifei. Do you want to be ordinary friends with me? If you do, I brought gifts for everyone."
Without further ado she began handing things out. The moment the children saw something free, they gathered around.
Liu Wenjie watched Xu Feifei's delighted look—this girl's method of making friends was direct all right; some rich young lady starting her route by scattering money.
Soon a middle-aged man wearing glasses walked in. He looked about thirty, a stack of papers in hand, every inch the scholarly type.
He walked to the lectern and rapped on the desk; the students quickly took their seats.
The man spoke clearly:
"Let me introduce myself—I'll be your homeroom teacher for the next few years. My name... doesn't matter; just call me 'Homeroom Teacher.' Next I'll take roll; when your name is called, stand up so we can confirm numbers."
Roll call ended quickly; the class had about fifty students—almost double a kindergarten class.
The homeroom teacher continued:
"In a moment I'll post the schedule on the wall. Take a look so you'll know what classes we have each day. Since everyone just met, we won't appoint class officers today. In one week, after you're familiar with each other, we'll hold a simple test. Based on the results we'll elect the class committee."
Hearing they'd elect class officers, Xu Feifei's eyes lit up—she had to be class president! Provided she could defeat a certain rotten boy.
After speaking, the teacher took a phone call and left.
The students sneaked to the lectern to see the week's schedule.
Xu Feifei skipped over happily.
But as she scanned the schedule in the crowd, the smile froze on her face.
Just the first day stunned her: in the morning, Chinese, Chinese, Math, Math; in the afternoon, Chinese, Math.
What... what sort of schedule was this?!
Outdoor classes? Handicraft?! Movie time? How could Music, PE and Art combined add up to only seven or eight periods a week? A single glance showed nothing but Chinese and Math!
How could elementary school schedules be like this! What was the point of her summer special training then?
She had mounted the podium in high spirits, descended trembling, and returned to her seat ash-gray.
Xu Feifei felt her life was over.
"Why is this happening... is the gap between kindergarten and elementary school really this huge? I must still be dreaming; I'm definitely still asleep."
Liu Wenjie hadn't looked at the schedule; he was merely curious at her drastic change. "Your fighting spirit dropped that fast? Despair in an instant—does the schedule have my name on it?"
Xu Feifei turned to Liu Wenjie, clenched her little fist, and declared war without any confidence: "L-Liu Wenjie, don't celebrate too soon. I'll become class president, just you wait and see—uwaaah."
With that, her cheeks puffed out in grievance; tears seemed to glimmer as she stared at Liu Wenjie.
Liu Wenjie suddenly wanted to laugh. "Well, do your best."
Xu Feifei was even more upset at his grin. She crossed her arms on the desk and buried her head.
"I hate you~"
Meanwhile, in Class Four next door.
The moment Xia Ying stepped into the classroom she clenched her hands at the sight of unfamiliar classmates.
She held her breath and sat in an empty seat.
Gently setting down her backpack, she listened to the girls chatting, wanting to join but not knowing how.
Everyone seemed so good at talking—only she wasn't.
Suddenly a girl with a high ponytail walked in and sat beside Xia Ying.
Xia Ying wore a mid-height ponytail.
Startled, she shivered, chanting the mantra to boost her courage: "Older Brother Wenjie is so cool~ Older Brother Wenjie is so cool~ Older Brother Wenjie is so cool..."
Forcing a smile, she greeted the person beside her. "H-hello, my name is Xia Ying."
The girl looked at Xia Ying and smiled sweetly. "Hello."
Xia Ying gazed at that smile, eyes wavering, almost crying with joy.
Older Brother Wenjie—I did it.
