Chapter 1798 - 410: Shangri-La, Doing My Best (Part 2)
"Who are you trying to fool? If you don’t tell me, I’ll just, I’ll just..." Unable to fight, Yan Xing suddenly burst into tears with a loud "wa", her cries earth-shattering, startling Fei Ye and even Kang Qi.
"She’s my second sister. Since she left home, I’ve longed for her day and night, can’t eat or sleep, I’ve lost ten pounds... Look, I’ve missed her so much my hair has gone white. I finally couldn’t bear the longing anymore and sneaked out of the house. After enduring countless hardships and risking my life, I finally made it here. I just want to see her once, just once, is it so difficult to fulfill this humble wish of mine?... Little monk... I beg you, for the sake of my deep longing for my sister, just let me see her once. I promise, I’ll only see her from afar..."
A lovely young girl cried so heart-breakingly that even someone with a heart of stone would soften. Fei Ye thought to himself, so she is Senior Fei Xin’s younger sister—no wonder her eyebrows and eyes seemed familiar, they closely resembled Senior Fei Xin.
Loving one must love all attached to them; at this moment, he didn’t find the girl so annoying anymore.
"Although I’d really like to help you, without instructions from the senior brother, I can’t let you see Senior Fei Xin."
"Fei Xin?" Yan Xing frowned disdainfully, "What an awful name."
"That senior brother of yours..." So annoying.
Fei Ye gave her a glance.
Yan Xing immediately chuckled, "So handsome, such a waste to be a monk..."
"We are all orphans adopted by the master, homeless. The temple is our home." Once, senior brother went down the mountain to ask for alms and was spotted by a talent scout who wanted to recruit him into the entertainment industry. Senior brother refused without a second thought. After taking vows at eighteen, he swore before Buddha to dedicate his life to him, intending to take over for our master in the future.
"This broken temple, I just don’t get what’s so good about staying here? What was my second sister thinking?" Yan Xing complained as she walked; such a high mountain, secluded from the world, chanting scriptures all day long; who wouldn’t go insane? She couldn’t even tolerate it for half a day.
"This is your room, benefactor, please enter."
Yan Xing stepped in, truly astonished by the austerity — just a clay bed and a table, nothing else.
"Is this even fit for human living?"
"Benefactor, your room is this way, let me show you." Fei Ye said to Kang Qi.
Kang Qi glanced at Yan Xing and bowed slightly with palms together, respectfully saying to Fei Ye, "Thank you, little monk."
He turned to follow Fei Ye out.
Yan Xing walked over and pushed open the window. Outside, the cliff and mountains were shrouded in clouds and mist, with everlasting green pines, the scenery was exceptionally beautiful.
She took a deep breath, the air was indescribably fresh, calming her entire heart. Who would’ve thought in this bustling modern society, there would still be such a secluded, paradise-like place.
Once the little monk Fei Ye left, Yan Xing sneaked off to find Kang Qi: "Let’s go for a walk, I must see my second sister today."
While packing his things, Kang Qi responded blandly, "Alright."
Yan Xing cheerfully took his hand, "Then let’s hurry."
Kang Qi discreetly brushed her hand aside and walked out. Yan Xing watched his long, retreating figure, looked at her bare palms, and pursed her lips.
Although the monastery isn’t large, it’s exquisitely built. Yan Xing strolled around the backyard, pondering which room her second sister might be in.
"Cloud Abode Zen Center?" Yan Xing read aloud, pointing at the plaque; the Zen Center gates were tightly shut, guarded by two young monks.
"Such a poetic name." Yan Xing’s eyes twinkled mischievously, "Could my second sister be inside?"
She said endless kind words to the two young monks, but they remained unmoved and refused her entry. Furious, Yan Xing paced in circles. The entire temple was built on a cliff, with only one main gate. To get inside otherwise, you’d have to scale the cliff.
Yan Xing refused to believe the two young monks wouldn’t eat or sleep, determined to outlast them.
At that moment, chanting filled the air, deep and powerful, seemingly transcending time and space, stirring one’s heart.
"Let’s go and see."
From a distance, Yan Xing saw the Daxiong Treasure Hall filled with monks sitting in circles on the ground, the sound of wooden fish soothing souls. Even as a non-believer, she felt the weight and solemnity of the Dharma.
Leading them was an elder monk in a saffron robe, with kind eyes. To his right sat the tall, slim monk Yan Xing saw at the gates earlier, known as senior brother, apparently holding a significant position in the temple.
In the center of the monks lay a person, the gravely ill Young Master Baili.
Lady Baili and the servants stood outside, tearfully filled with hope.
The chanting continued until five in the afternoon, leaving Yan Xing dizzy. She finally understood how Sun Wukong felt when the tight headband was chanted. In this temple, no matter the corner, the sound of chanting was ever-present, driving her crazy.
"Master, it’s up to you now." Fei Tan spoke respectfully.
"Before senior brother left, he asked me to do my best. This child is fated with Buddha, his life shouldn’t end prematurely. The rituals will continue for two more days; can senior brother make it back by then?"
Master Hui Chan, fellow disciple of Master Huiming, was a high monk who normally preached outside. During Master Huiming’s travels, he temporarily oversaw the temple.
"I’ve sent word to master, he should make it in time."
Baili Zhuo and his companions stayed at the temple. Hearing the rituals would continue for two days until Master Huiming returned, Lady Baili was so grateful she almost knelt to Fei Tan. No matter what, it was a glimmer of hope.
"Aunt Chen, instruct immediately: set up stations nationwide for three consecutive days of free aid to the poor, regardless of cost. I want to accumulate virtue and do good for my son’s life..."
"Madam, rest assured, I’ll see to it right away. Your kindness will certainly move Buddha, and the young master will recover. But you haven’t eaten for two days; how can you carry on like this? Madam, please eat something."
"Alright, I’ll eat. For my son, I must hold on."
Aunt Chen immediately went to prepare the meal.
The temple’s vegetarian meals were quite a specialty. Used to gourmet delicacies, Yan Xing was surprised at how tasty they were. After dinner, she took a walk around the temple, returning to the entrance of the Cloud Abode Zen Center. Finding two new young monk faces at the gate, she attempted to get close but was once again refused entry.
The tightly shut gate held a mysterious and solemn aura, leaving her curious about the inside. Why such secrecy?
She’d explored the entire backyard in the afternoon, not spotting her second sister anywhere, leading her to believe she might be in the Zen Center.
She’d return at midnight, certain the young monks would eventually doze off.
"Goodnight." Yan Xing waved at Kang Qi and turned back into her room.
"Xingxing...." Kang Qi suddenly called out.
Yan Xing turned around, confused, and yawned, "What’s up?"
Kang Qi pursed his lips, "Nothing, sleep early." Then he turned and walked away, his steps slightly hurried.
"Hmph, what’s that about." Yan Xing didn’t mind, laying down and falling asleep immediately.
As it turned out, Yan Xing slept through till the next morning.
She rubbed her drowsy eyes awake, leaping alertly as she remembered something.
"Darn it, how did I sleep till morning?" She angrily smacked her head.
Slipping on her shoes, she ran to knock on Kang Qi’s door, "Why didn’t you wake me?"
After knocking for a while with no response, she pushed the door open; the neatly folded bedding revealed no one stayed there.
A bad feeling crept into Yan Xing’s heart.
She saw a letter on the table, instinctively stepping back, breaking into a run.
