Chapter 188: A Day of Trouble
Chapter 188: A Day of Trouble
"I-I’m sorry he caused trouble," the man said awkwardly. "But seriously, why would he even chase after a bone like that..."
"Maybe he’s a dog?" Albe said.
"No way! He’s my brother, so he’s a dragon!"
"See?" Albe shrugged. "You wanted to see one, right? Why not take it as compensation and ask to touch him?"
"Hm..." Qiong Xing thought for a moment. "No, I’ll pass. I feel like he would demand an unreasonable price in return."
He wanted something more... like a fated meeting.
Qiong Xing casually made a suggestion and then rejected it himself.
The man’s face turned red with anger.
"You’re making fun of us proud dragons—!"
"Well then, we’ll be going now," Qiong Xing said calmly. "Good luck finding your lost brother."
"Huh!? W-wait! Listen to me!"
"So noisy..." Albe muttered.
"By the way, what is that?" Qiong Xing suddenly asked.
Ignoring the shouting man, Qiong Xing’s eyes lit up as he looked at a fish he had never seen before.
For once, he wanted to eat fish.
"I thought we were going to get meat?" Albe said.
"...Sometimes it’s fine to change things," Qiong Xing replied.
Even though he had been loudly insisting on meat, the moment Qiong Xing saw the fish, he completely changed his mind.
Albe could only give a wry smile at how quickly he switched.
Qiong Xing puffed his lips slightly like he was sulking, but he still could not take his eyes off the fish.
Seeing that, Albe seemed to give up arguing and only asked that they have meat tomorrow instead.
"Maybe we can make stew. If it’s that, Cari can eat a lot too. And for those who want more, we can make a beef stew."
"So I have to help again, huh?"
For the demon race who did not often use magic in daily life, Qiong Xing’s way of using it seemed quite unique.
"It was delicious, right? And Cari was really happy too."
"...Hmph."
Maybe he was too embarrassed to admit it honestly, but his response was cold.
Still, the side of his face that could be seen was slightly red.
"Hey! How many times are you people going to ignore me?!"
...He was still here?
After making that much noise, they had thought he would go search right away, but instead he had apparently been listening the whole time while Qiong Xing and the others casually discussed today’s menu.
Was he just that free?
"We’re not ignoring you, are we? We greeted you, and we even told you to do your best."
Qiong Xing calmly argued that there was no reason for him to be scolded.
The man seemed unable to respond and fell silent.
"More importantly, you people started talking on your own and didn’t listen to us either. And then you shout at us like we’re the bad ones. Isn’t that a bit unfair?"
"Th-that’s..."
"That’s?"
"That’s... because you weren’t listening..."
"We were listening. We answered what we could. But whether we answer or not is our choice, not an obligation, right? There’s no reason for us to be blamed."
"...."
"Besides, do you think anyone would want to listen to people who tried to lay a hand on their precious family? Honestly, I think we deserve praise just for talking to you at all."
"...."
The man lowered his head and fell silent again.
Qiong Xing let out a small sigh.
Because of how things had started, he had tried to avoid getting too involved. But now it almost felt like he was the one bullying the man.
"For now, you should go look for your younger brother. He seems careless, and there’s no telling what he might do. Also, take this, make sure you and your brother share it together."
"...Sweet."
Qiong Xing placed several pieces of candy into the man’s hand and casually tossed one into his mouth.
"They say something sweet helps when you’re tired," Qiong Xing said calmly. "Alright, off you go."
He lightly patted the man’s head.
The man didn’t say anything, but he nodded and disappeared into the crowd.
"Is he really a dragon?" Albe muttered. "He’s more like a dog."
"True," Qiong Xing replied. "But it’s much better than him getting angry and rampaging."
Qiong Xing had never met other dragons before, but although those two were bigger than him, they felt more like children.
The younger brother was unpredictable and hard to understand, while the older brother tried so hard to act like a proper big brother that it backfired.
In theory, they were probably strong enough to swallow someone like Qiong Xing whole.
But from what he had seen so far, they weren’t scary at all.
They just felt like two ordinary human brothers you could find anywhere.
"It would be nice if you could get along with Cari like that too," Qiong Xing said.
"No way! Caribert won’t turn into an idiot like that!" Albe replied immediately.
"I know," Qiong Xing said with a small smile. "I just mean it would be nice if you could talk openly with each other like that."
"...I’ll try."
Qiong Xing didn’t recommend using those two as role models.
But the way they argued and still spoke their minds honestly... that kind of relationship was actually very nice.
"There’s no need to rush," Qiong Xing said gently. "Take it slowly."
Relationships between people were difficult.
One-sided feelings alone could not build anything.
So Qiong Xing hoped that, little by little, both sides would come to value each other.
...
"Albe! What’s that? That red—"
"Hey, idiot! That’s where I set the trap—ah, come on!"
Albe was already exhausted.
They had come to the forest because Qiong Xing wanted to hunt, but they still hadn’t caught anything.
The reason was simple.
Every time Albe set a trap... Qiong Xing ruined it.
Qiong Xing was actually good at making traps.
But after setting one, he would relax... then get distracted by something else and completely forget about it.
And just like that, he stepped on the trap again and broke it.
"...Sorry," Qiong Xing said. "This time I’ll catch a deer—"
