100 Ways to Solve a Murder

Chapter 89: The Calm Before the Storm

Chapter 89: The Calm Before the Storm

7 months ago, Guys Hospital

Levi waltzed in Guy’s hallways, heading directly towards the morgue with Marco beside him.

Davies had given them a call a few hours previously about a case.

Davies stood waiting for them just outside the morgue door, hands in his pockets. The older man had an odd expression on his face, something the two both missed.

After exchanging a short greeting, the three walked in the morgue, the double doors swinging behind them.

Inside Janet stood waiting patiently, chart in hand. Levi scanned the room searching for the ginger,

"Dr. Gray?" he asked.

Janet tenses at the mention of the name, "Dr. Gray is busy at the moment." she answered, pressing her lips together.

The two tall men shot her a look. Sam was never really that busy to assist Levi in any of his cases. It’s one of the things everyone has noticed, if she was needed by him, she would be there. They all knew he received special treatment from the Director.

Davies looked anywhere but Janet, he knew what ’busy’ meant.

"She’s..." Janet started, lost for words. How was she to explain it to them?

"She’s not in a great mood." Davies blurted out. He spoke with the woman just minutes ago, and the boy Sam was in a foul mood.

Marco turned to Janet for confirmation and her face betrayed her.

Levi frowned,

"I need her here. Call her." He instructed dismissively.

Janet opened her mouth to speak,

"Ah..." She started, unsure, didn’t want to call the woman, and Davies mirrored her reaction.

"That’s not a good idea. She’s....she’s in a foul mood." Davies emphasized, his eyes held a hint of anxiety behind it.

15minutes ago, Sam passed him by the morgue door. Usually, she didn’t give two shits that he was smoking there, it was their little secret. But when she passed him by, he instantly saw her scowl.

"Detective Inspector." She greeted him too formally than usual. She grabbed the cigarette from his mouth and threw it on the tiled floor, stepping on it as she walked in the morgue in one swift motion. Leaving the older man gobsmacked.

Levi shot Janet a look,

"I need her to read on this body before it’s been cleaned," he said, getting annoyed.

"She gave us the chart," Janet said, offering it to him. Levi eyed the chart in disgust, he doesn’t need it. He needs attending.

"I want her to tell me what she saw in detail, not what she wrote." Levi insisted, looking at the blue-haired morgue technician. Janet felt small under his intense gaze, and she sighed in defeat.

Davies gave her a defeated look, muttering "Feck." under his breath.

Levi narrowed his eyes at Janet, who didn’t move from her spot.

"Janet! We are trying to solve a case here!" He barked. Janet finding no other choice, she ran out the door to get the Director. She was walking on a double-edged sword, both sides may cause her harm. And she was terrified.

"Can’t you just look at it? Sam may be busy, she’s the Director you know." Marco reasoned, not liking the expression on Davies’ face. It spelled trouble.

Minutes later, the morgue door swung open, slamming against the wall loudly. First walked in was Sam, followed by Janet who seemed smaller if possible.

Her green eyes narrowed at the slicked blond,

"What do you need?" She demanded.

Levi turned and looked at her, she was glaring at him, he noted.

"You’re angry." He commented plainly.

"Don’t waste my time with chitchat what do you need me for?" She repeated firmly. Levi involuntarily swallowed under her fiery gaze, "I...ah..."

He was lost for words, and Sam slammed her palm on the empty examination table irritated, making everyone jump.

"Speak up, Mr. JACKSON. I GOT A PRINT AND BALLISTICS RUNNING, AND 221 CASES TO REVIEW. I LOVE TO STAY HAVE TEA, CAKE AND ALL THAT SHEBANG, BUT I TRULY DON’T." Sam spoke harshly.

"I need your read on the body," Levi answered stiffly. Marco sent Davies a nervous look, and Davies shrugged; subconsciously trying to look small and not be noticed by the redhead.

Sam turned to Janet, hand open, and Janet handed her the chart carefully, moving further behind her seconds after.

"I don’t see why my presence is needed. When Ms. Rivera had already handed you my findings, written in detail on this chart. As I recall, Levi, you know how to read." Sam hissed, resulting in a pregnant silence for 5 painful seconds.

Levi opened his mouth but no words came out, he wondered had he recently pissed her off? He cannot recall.

Starting back to his hazel eyes,

"Anything else?" She challenged, and everyone including the great Levi Jackson shook their heads.

Sam slammed the chart against Levi’s chest. And she faked a smile,

"Fantastic. Next time don’t waste my time. Good day!" She said turning and walking out, not waiting for a response.

The double doors swung behind her, and when she was out of earshot Davies expelled a sigh of relief.

"Bloody---oh," Davies said, mouth wide open in awe.

Levi turned to Marco, a look of genuine confusion etched on his chiseled face

"Did I say or do something wrong?" he asked the bearded man. Marco shrugged, baffled himself. Levi was his usual dick self, nothing new. So what was it?

"She’s just...not in a great mood," Janet whispered looking down her feet.

...

4 hours later

After solving the case, Marco and Levi watched Davies’ men cuff the suspect. The three stood next to the police car, "Glad that’s over with." Marco commented, relieved; he and Davies exchanged smiles. Another criminal off the streets.

Levi however, had that baffled look on his face. "Levi?" Marco tried to catch his attention.

He fixed his tie and walked away not uttering any sort of goodbye. Marco followed soon after, calling for his attention.

"Levi! Where are you going?" He shouted

"Go home, Marco. The case is solved." Levi replied, unlocking his Shelby Cobra’s door and getting in, leaving a confused Marco.
