The Dance Begins
The Dance Begins
The dance was in full swing, with the music blaring and laughter filling the gym, but Hanna couldn’t shake the strange tension hanging in the air. She tried to focus on Marco, but he seemed distant, watching her with a look that was both cold and guarded. It was like he was studying her, waiting for her to slip up, and the pressure was suffocating.
When she spotted Finn across the room, her heart did a little flip. He looked composed, but she could see something in his eyes that told her everything was fine now—that he’d taken care of the trouble she hadn’t even known was lurking. She wanted to thank him, to acknowledge what he’d done, but Marco’s tense presence kept her anchored, his arm gripping hers just a little too tightly.
“Everything okay?” she asked Marco, forcing a lightness she didn’t feel.
“Fine,” he replied curtly, his gaze still fixed on Finn. “But you seem distracted, Hanna. Should I be worried?”
She swallowed, the accusation clear in his voice. “Of course not, Marco. I’m here with you, aren’t I?”
But Marco didn’t answer, his gaze darkening as he watched Finn. Hanna felt a surge of guilt, not just for the kiss she’d shared with Finn, but for the unspoken feelings she knew still lingered beneath the surface. She tried to shake them off, but as she looked across the room and saw Finn smiling at her, the warmth of that stolen moment crept back into her heart.
Meanwhile, Ciara watched Hanna and Finn from across the gym, her grip on Jacob’s arm tightening. She’d noticed the stolen glances between them, the way Hanna’s eyes would drift across the room, softening whenever they landed on Finn. It was like watching her worst fears play out in front of her, and the jealousy she’d tried so hard to bury bubbled up with a vengeance.
“What’s wrong?” Jacob asked, noticing her clenched jaw and narrowed gaze.
“Nothing,” Ciara replied tersely, though her eyes never left Hanna and Finn. “Just watching some people make fools of themselves.”
Jacob’s brow furrowed, a frown flickering across his face as he picked up on her bitterness. “Ciara, we’re here to have a good time. Can we just… let it go?”
But Ciara barely heard him, her mind whirling as she watched Hanna and Finn exchange another look. The anger that simmered in her chest was almost too much to hold back, and the memories of what she’d seen in the library resurfaced, each one sharper than the last. She didn’t know how much longer she could keep quiet, but for now, she forced herself to smile at Jacob, the tension between them growing with every passing second.
