“I can’t help it.” She buried her face against Jean’s chest. “I am a terrible mother. I had just one. Just one. Others have more and they still did a brilliant job by being there for all of them. I couldn’t even manage with just one.” She sobbed. “I’m happy that God has finally listened to my prayers and brought him back to me but not only do I feel so ashamed by what I did, I also feel unworthy to even call him my son.”

“Shh… I don’t think he’ll agree with you.” Jean rocked the sobbing woman in his arms until she called down. “Would you like to go and lie down for a bit?” He asked worriedly as he took in how weak the woman looked.

“No.” Yolanda shook her head as she stepped back from Jean. “Sorry for getting your shirt wet.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“I’ll just go upstairs and freshen up.” She said quietly. “Then I’ll come down and prepare something for you to eat.”

“How about we all go out and eat?” Jean asked. But he knew he’d said the wrong thing as soon as he saw Yolanda’s eyes well up again.

“You’re right.” She nodded. “He wouldn’t want to eat my food.”

“Are you kidding me?” Jean exclaimed. “The man has been talking about your food nonstop since we woke up this morning.” Jean lied but the happy smile he saw on Yolanda’s face made it so worth it. “I only spoke about eating out because I thought you were tired.”

“I’m not. I’d love to cook for you boys.” She wiped at her eyes. “That reminds me. The groceries…”

“I took care of it,” Jean told her. “Kenneth is a good kid.”

“Aw, you didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to. Don’t take too long up there. We’ll be waiting in the kitchen to help you cook.”

“All right. Thank you, Jean.” Yolanda said softly. “I’m glad he has you.” With that, she turned and headed up the stairs.

When Jean entered the kitchen, he found Bradley leaning against the Island with his back to him. He wrapped his arms around Bradley from behind and rested the side of his face on his shoulder.

“Tell me you’re okay,” Jean said.

“I think she’s not well.” Bradley breathed.

“I’ll check her out,” Jean said.

“How?” Bradley turned around within Jean’s arms and looked at his boyfriend with curious but hopeful eyes. “You don’t have a hospital in Del…”

“Mum has a hospital here but that’s not what I even had in mind,” Jean said, wiping the moisture beneath Bradley’s eyes with his thumbs. “We’re going home with her.” He said firmly.

“Jean, I don’t think she’ll leave her home and…”

“She will do anything you ask of her.” Jean kissed Bradley lightly. “This house needs work. So we’re going to kill two birds with one stone. Take her with us for a thorough check-up whilst the house undergoes the needed repairs.”

“You’ve already thought of everything, haven’t you?” Bradley whispered, looking at Jean with awe.

“That’s all I did as I waited on the porch.” Jean kissed Bradley again.

“I love you.”

“Right back at you. I told your mum we’re going to help her cook.” Jean stepped away from Bradley and rubbed his palms together gleefully. “Where are the groceries?” He glanced around.

“I put them away,” Bradley said.

“You remembered where everything is. That’s my smart boyfriend.” Jean drawled.

“Oh, fuck off.” Bradley laughed. “I heard all that you told her in the living room.” He said quietly. “Thank you.”

“You can thank me properly in bed, later tonight,” Jean responded huskily, moving close to Bradley and drawing his lower lip into his mouth. “I haven’t completely gone back down since we got to your mother’s door.” He muttered when he finally released the lip.

“Not even with all those tears?” Bradley’s eyebrow raised.

“What the fuck does tears have to do with a hungry cock?” Jean deadpanned, making Bradley laugh. “You’ve cried too much today.” He said quietly. “God, it killed me hearing you cry. But it was good to let it out. I plan on giving you so much pleasure tonight to make up for all those tears.” Jean looked into Bradley’s eyes and couldn’t help smirking at the stark desire he saw in there. “On a more serious note, how are you feeling? Headache, throat…”

“I’m fine, baby.” Bradley moved to sit on the Kitchen Island, coiled his legs around Jean, wrapped his arms around his neck, and leaned his forehead against his. “You worry too much.”

“As he should,” Yolanda said from the doorway, looking real cute in a long flared skirt and a flattering white top. Her long hair had been rolled into a bun, making her look younger and beautiful. “When you love someone, you need to worry about them.”

Bradley lifted his head but didn’t let Jean go. “Err…Ma, are you okay with this?” Bradley asked despite himself. The last thing he wanted was to make his mother uncomfortable.

“You mean, showing your man some affection? You could make love to him on the Island and I wouldn’t bat an eye. That’s how okay I am with my son’s sexuality.” She said, surprising Bradley. “Now, what would you boys want to eat?”

“You look beautiful, Mama,” Bradley said softly instead of answering his mother’s question.

“Thank you, baby.” Yolanda smiled. “Still waiting.”

“It’s your call, Bradley.” Jean laughed.

“Bradley,” Yolanda whispered. “That’s the name you used.” It wasn’t a question. “No wonder we couldn’t find you.”

“We?” Bradley frowned.

“Your father and I. Let’s not talk about that. Should I prepare your favourite?” She looked up at Bradley expectantly.

“And what’s that?” Jean asked.

“Jambalaya.” Mother and son responded in unison, making Jean laugh. “And caramel cake,” Yolanda added. “Alright, boys. You said you wanted to help.”

“We did.” Jean grinned as he watched Yolanda bring down the needed ingredients from the shelves and the fridge.

“You slice the sausages into round shapes.” She told Jean who got right down to work. “And you cut up the chicken.” She pushed about a pound of boneless chicken breast which had been part of the groceries Kenneth had brought in, to Bradley. “Do you remember how you used to cut it?” She asked softly.

“I do.” Bradley nodded as he reached for a knife.

“Great.” Yolanda switched on the oven. “I’ll quickly mix the cake and pop it into the oven and get started on the jambalaya.”

Lunch was absolutely perfect. Jean ate until he couldn’t eat another bite. Bradley was in seventh heaven. He grinned throughout. Yolanda was happy her son and his man enjoyed the meal. She prayed that if what was happening was a dream, she should stay asleep forever. After the meal, Bradley and Jean insisted on cleaning up. Then they all went to sit in the family area where there was a huge organ, a guitar, trumpet, and some other musical instruments.

“It’s still here.” Bradley breathed as he stared at the guitar which had his name on it. It had been a birthday present from his parents.

“Your guitar?” Yolanda chuckled. “Of course it’s still here. Where did you expect it to be? Sorry, we never got around to getting someone to teach you.”

“Wendell taught me,” Bradley said without a thought as he picked up the guitar.

Jean didn’t miss how Yolanda stiffened at the mention of Wendell’s name. He also watched quietly as Bradley grabbed a tissue and began to clean the guitar which was the exact replica of the one he’d seen in his bedroom.

“Jean?” Bradley turned to face Jean with a sad smile. “Will you help me play something?” He thrust the guitar at Jean.

Jean was stunned for a moment at the request. But he recovered quickly and reached out to take the guitar from Bradley. “Sure.” The fact that Bradley was even willing to allow him to play that particular guitar was a good sign, Jean thought. “What do you want us to play?”

“My mother’s favourite song.” Bradley went to sit behind the organ and pushed up the cover. “Ever heard, ‘thanks, I give you thanks’?”

“One moment.” Jean took out his cell phone and did a quick check as Bradley got ready.

“Ma, you can’t sing if you’re crying.” Bradley chided Yolanda who was wiping at her eyes. “I’ll give you the cue, baby.” He gave Jean a slow wink and laughed when Jean actually blushed.
